𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗴𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲.

HF Sinclair's proposed Westline Connect pipeline would run through sensitive watersheds, Salt Lake City's eastern foothills, and residential neighborhoods, putting critical water resources and communities at risk.

💧 The Parley's, Emigration Canyon, and Mountain Dell watershed supplies drinking water to nearly 𝟰𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, while approximately 𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀.

And according to HF Sinclair, the refined petroleum products would be headed to Nevada and California, with no demonstrated benefit to the Utah communities bearing the risks.

Utahn’s Are Opposing Data Centers. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻

A recent poll showed nearly 76% of Utah residents oppose or strongly oppose building more data centers in Utah. UPHE took our own poll, out of which over 90% of the 194 respondents oppose data center development.

Utahns have stood more united than we’ve ever seen over the Stratos project proposal in Box Elder County. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲.

Just last week, over 100 residents attended a Carbon County Commission meeting as nuclear reactor developers minimized plans and risks of their proposals for reactors to help power data centers.

𝗨𝘁𝗮𝗵𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲. The survey found that 86% of respondents don’t believe the costs of data centers, including their water and energy demands, outweigh their economic benefits.

𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. The legislature needs to set water and energy limits and standards, and complete an audit of our resources before these developments continue to roll in piecemeal.

𝗨𝗣𝗛𝗘 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

A shout-out to Millcreek City!

Following the Utah Division of Air Quality's approval of an air quality permit for the proposed Parley's Canyon gravel mine, Millcreek City has announced plans to pursue an appeal.

The city has raised concerns about fugitive dust and potential impacts on nearby neighborhoods and the broader Salt Lake Valley.

Why is Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment opposed to the massive expansion of AI data centers in Utah?

💧 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 #𝟮: 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀.

In the first video of our physician series, we examined the air pollution impacts of AI data centers. Now UPHE physicians and board memebers exlain another major concern: the enormous water demands of data centers and the potential risks associated with cooling chemicals and electronic waste.

Developers often promote closed-loop cooling systems as a way to conserve water. But there's more to the story.

𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:Generating the electricity needed to power data centers can require substantial amounts of water, beyond what's used directly at the facility.

𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲-𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀: Cooling systems that reduce water consumption may require more electricity, potentially increasing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀: Certain cooling systems and electronic components can involve PFAS, commonly called "forever chemicals," raising questions about contamination and disposal.

HF Sinclair is hoping to lay a 𝗴𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆’𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗦𝗟𝗖’𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀. All SLC residents should be alarmed by this proposal.

The Parley’s/Emigration Canyon/Mountain Dell watershed provides drinking water for 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟰𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. About 𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿. A pipeline leak could permanently contaminate these critical water resources.

Every pipeline carrying fossil fuels eventually leaks somewhere. We simply cannot allow that kind of risk to our water supply.

SLC already knows what a pipeline failure can do. In 2010, 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗣𝗼𝗻𝗱 and sickened residents along the creek. Even a year later water sampling from the creek still found carcinogenic chemicals in some spots 𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗣𝗔’𝘀 “𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀.”

Red Butte Creek homeowners are still experiencing health impacts, and at least two residents have died from diseases likely triggered by their exposure.

A gasoline leak could pose an even greater hazard in this location, because it penetrates soil and subsurface geologic formations more easily than crude oil, increasing the risk of contaminating groundwater. 𝗚𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗶𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲, adding greatly to the fire risk in a canyon with only one exit road and an “extreme” fire risk rating.

Utah does not need more fuel supply, and this pipeline will not lower our gas or diesel prices. Refined products from Sinclair’s new pipeline are 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮.

Utah would take on the risk of a disastrous pipeline leak contaminating our water supply, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝘁𝗮𝗵.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲.
