Long before Guadalupe became the school and community center we know today, it was a gathering place for Mexican American and Latino families on Salt Lake City’s west side.
In 1930, the St. Patrick Mission was renamed the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe, becoming an important cultural and community hub for Spanish-speaking Utahns.
By the 1960s, Guadalupe had become a home for community organizing and the growing Latino Civil Rights Movement in Utah. Parishioners came together to address the challenges facing their families and dreamed of a center where children, families, and neighbors could learn, gather, and find support.
In 1966, that dream became the Guadalupe Center. 💚
From early English education and child learning programs to community services, Guadalupe has continued to grow alongside the families we serve. Today, Hispanic and Latino families remain a vital part of our community and our story.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re honoring the people, families, and traditions that helped build Guadalupe and continue to shape its future. 🌎✨
