Rozina Bahlibi, once a refugee from Eritrea and now living in Utah, formed the Utah Eritrea Connection (UEC) in order to help the families in her hometown, Himbiriti and provide support to Eritrean refugees in Salt Lake City. Over the past thirty years Eritrea, a small, once-vibrant country of 3 million people, has struggled to keep its independence. Devastated by the effects of border c

onflict with Ethiopia, severe drought, and the inability to attract world aid organizations, Eritrea now ranks 157 out of 177 countries on the 2006 United Nations Human Development Report. With limited foreign reserves in its central bank, and much of the available work force carrying out national service duties, Eritrea in many ways is unable to sustain its people. This situation has created new refugees who leave Eritrea to start a new life in a new country.

This is a true reflection of the architecture in Asmara. What is not reported is the plight of the every day people who cannot afford the coffee shops or Italian restaurants. Take a bus 20 miles out to the villlage of Himbiriti where you find broken down houses built in the traditional way. The ground is arrid with little chance to grow crops and the elderly and sick are starving. The young people are all conscripted into the army or have fled over the border to other countries. When I visited Eritrea I too was met with politeness from officials but the sad thing to me is that this wonderful country is losing all its youth because of its repressive government.
Check on the Utah Eritrea connection page to check on how we are providing aid to the people in Himbiriti. Our annual fundraiser is coming soon.

Our attempts to acquire a tent here continue. we are still bidding
