Utah Native Plant Society

Utah Native Plant Society The UNPS is dedicated to the appreciation, preservation, conservation and responsible use of the native plants.

Founded in 1978, the Utah Native Plant Society is dedicated to the appreciation, preservation, conservation and responsible use of the native plant and plant communities found in the state of Utah and the Intermountain West. Our goal is to foster public recognition of the spectacularly diverse flora of the state--a natural treasure to be valued, respected and protected. We have essentially no admi

nistrative overhead; our board members and "staff" are all unpaid volunteers. Native plants are plants naturally found in nature. These natural plants have adapted to an amazing array of habitats and microclimates, achieving a balance with other living things and forming the foundation for all life.

Hello, all–

As we venture out again in search of native plants in bloom all over our beautiful state, stop and take the time to write an article for the Spring Issue of the UNPS Sego Lily newsletter. Publication is planned for early May, so articles can be submitted anytime between now and the end of April. New plant research, experiences from last summer and fall hiking in the deserts or mountains, or working on botanical projects in the field are just a few examples of subjects that are enjoyed by our readers.

The Sego Lily editors can use most any text format for articles. We are happy to help with any questions you might have. Photos are always best submitted in original resolution and as individual files separate from text. You can indicate desired positioning of photos within a document.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. For submissions and questions: [email protected] or to [email protected]

Thank you,
Cathy King

UNPS Nesletter co-editor

The 2026 meeting of the Eriogonum Society will be held in the botanically rich Siskiyou-Klamath area of southwestern Oregon and northwestern California, July 9-12th. From our base near Selma, we will visit local botanical areas and range as far as Crescent City and Mount Ashland. Lodging and camping are available at our base camp at Whisper Canyon Ranch or in the towns of Cave Junction or Grants Pass.

The Klamath Mountains are home to several endemic Eriogonum species, including Waldo, Siskiyou, Trinity, Congdon’s, Jaynes Canyon, and Klamath Mountain buckwheats. The Rough & Ready and Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical areas also feature a variety of locally endemic plants.

Eriogonum Society Meetings include a half-day workshop on Eriogonum identification, field trips to buckwheat hotspots, dinners with local speakers, and the chance to meet lots of buckwheat enthusiasts.

Extend your trip with a visit to the Oregon Caves or a few days among the redwoods and Darlingtonia bogs.

We want to give a MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who came and enjoyed PlantFest!!! It was a ton of fun, and I heard so many good things. We'd love to have some more data to support future events and make next year even better.

The following anonymous survey should take about 5 minutes to finish. We're giving out a couple free UNPS stickers, so it's definitely worth filling out! We'd love for each person that came to answer, so if you came with friends or family, send them the link to fill out too!
