Alongside large data centers being proposed in Utah, there is another industry proposing large development with risks to public health: the nuclear industry.
This past week it was announced that a nuclear reactor site near Green River came back to life with new experimental projects in mind.
HEAL opposed the Green River nuclear project 10 years ago, and our concerns have not changed today. Local communities are still raising serious questions about water use, risks to the Colorado River ecosystem, radioactive waste, and the long-term costs Utahns could be left paying if the project fails. HEAL believes taxpayer dollars should be invested in protecting our communities and water future, not repeating risky nuclear proposals that have already failed once before.
HEAL has some concerns about fast tracking radioactive projects across the state, including powering data centers with nuclear energy.
We want to make sure that communities have all the information about past, present, and future risks associated with the entire nuclear chain that Utah is pursuing.
Utah needs:
- ANSWERS from our decision makers and industry leaders
- An independent study bill that gives us details about jobs, costs, risks associated with Utah pursuing nuclear energy
- Realistic comparisons between energy sources
- Representation of affected communities in decision-making
- Independent oversight from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission
- Transparent decisionmaking
