Herding Haven

Herding Haven Herding Haven rescues dogs that have been deemed "unadoptable" from shelters, rehabilitates them and finds them forever homes.

Located in Salt Lake City, UT, we are an all volunteer, foster-based non-profit (501c3) dog rescue. Herding Haven rescues dogs from shelters who have been deemed unadoptable due to physical disabilities, medical issues and/or behavioral problems. We rehabilitate and help them find loving, forever homes. Our goal is to find the best home for each and every dog in our care.

Today was a big day for little Opal! ❤️
Our paralyzed Border Collie x Husky puppy took her very first spin in her new wheelchair. Well... "spin" might be a bit of an exaggeration. 😆
Despite our best efforts—including the irresistible lure of her favorite rubber chicken—Opal wasn't quite convinced that moving was part of the plan. Instead, she spent most of her time carefully considering her options while everyone cheered her on.
Meanwhile, Finnegan was doing his absolute best to be a mentor. He zoomed around and tried so hard to show Opal just how much fun life on wheels can be. But Opal wasn't ready to take his advice today.
And that's okay.
Learning something new takes time, especially when you're a puppy navigating a world that looks a little different. Today wasn't about racing across the yard—it was about taking the first step on a brand-new journey.
As the saying goes, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
We have no doubt that Opal will figure it out. And when she does, we're pretty sure Finnegan is going to have some serious competition. 🐾💨
Stay tuned. We have a feeling wheelchair races are in this girl's future! ❤️

Stopped on the way home from the hospital to get Sadie a little treat (pupcup). She is such a brave girl! She is still wagging her tail despite being confused, groggy and probably in some pain (will never understand how hospitals can think that gabapentin snd carprophen are adequate for the pain associated with an amputation.., that would be like giving advil and gabapentin to a person who just lost a leg!) 🐾❤️

Meet Sadie, a brave little Heeler mix pup whose journey took an unexpected and unfortunate turn today. 🙁

Sadie was pulled from an Indiana Shelter by Herding Haven with a fractured tibia and fibula in her left back leg. We were hopeful that her fractured back leg could be repaired and that she would have the chance to run, play, and live life on all four paws. Unfortunately, during surgery today to repair the fractures, it became clear that the fractures were far too complex and severe to be repaired.

To give Sadie the best chance at a pain-free, happy future, the difficult decision was made to amputate her injured leg.

The good news? Heeler's like Sadie are incredibly resilient. She should have no problem navigating the world as a tripod, and we know she has a bright future ahead of her. Her spirit remains strong and she is winning the hearts of all the staff at the veterinary hospital.

However, the surgery, diagnostics, and ongoing medical care have created significant expenses for our rescue. We are asking our wonderful supporters to help us offset Sadie's medical costs so we can continue providing lifesaving care to dogs like her.

Every donation, no matter the size, makes a difference and helps ensure that Sadie—and other dogs in need—receive the care they deserve.

Thank you for supporting Herding Haven and for believing in second chances. ❤️

Some days in rescue, you celebrate the wins. And some days you feel buried under the weight of devastation.
The hardest part of rescue is not the hard work- anxiously awaiting news on surgeries, hours of rehab, sleepless nights and unimaginable trauma.
The hardest part of rescue is knowing when to let go.
Sweet Snoopy came to us as a tiny, tick-infested, injured puppy who deserved so much better than the hand he had been dealt. At first, we didn’t know just how catastrophic his injuries truly were. We held onto hope. We believed maybe, just maybe, this little guy could overcome the odds.
And so many incredible people stepped up to help him fight.
His foster mom in San Antonio who got him out of the shelter and spent hours removing ticks from his fragile little body. She gave him love and comfort when he had none.
His foster mom in Utah who flew round trip to San Antonio to bring Snoopy to safety and poured every ounce of love into him over the weekend—cooking chicken and rice, helping him p*e and p**p, sleeping on the couch beside his x-pen so he would never be alone if he needed something. She never left his side.
Today, the amazing team at Granite Veterinary Specialists did everything they could to find a path forward for Snoopy. But the injuries were just too severe.
His pelvis was crushed and smashed inward. Both femurs were broken in extremely difficult places, and because too much time had passed before he received proper care, the bones had already begun to fuse incorrectly. Even with heroic measures, Snoopy would have faced a lifetime of severe disability and chronic pain.
We couldn’t do that to him.
We loved him too much.
So today, with shattered hearts, we gave Snoopy the one thing the world had failed to give him before rescue—peace, dignity, and love.
Thank you to every single person who donated, shared his story, cheered him on, prayed for him, and loved him from afar. Snoopy mattered. His life mattered. And although we only had him for a short time, he left paw prints on all of our hearts forever.
Run free, little Snoop Dawg. No more pain. 💔🐾🌈

***LAST DITCH EFFORT***
Herding Haven posted Thyme for a foster just over a week ago. He was actually adopted from the shelter; but the adopters quickly learned that Thyme absolutely cannot live with cats (and they have 3). He does well with calm and/or respectful dogs (not a fan of crazy, in-your-face puppies), and is good with people. He is great in his crate, house trained and walks well on a leash. The adopters reached out to Herding Haven (knowing that we had posted him for a foster before they adopted him). If we cannot find a foster for Thyme before Monday he will have to go back to the shelter. 😭. Thyme was really struggling in the shelter and we would hate for him to have to go back. PLEASE if you have no cats living with you and have an interest in fostering, send a PM to Herding Haven through Facebook or email [email protected] (Located in Utah).

There are no words...
A wonderful volunteer and temporary foster picked up Snoopy from the San Antonio shelter yesterday. This video captures his condition. He is absolutely covered in ticks and in terrible pain from the injuries he sustained. This poor baby has been in the shelter since May 7. Infested with fleas and ticks. Unable to stand or walk. What the video doesn't show is that he is covered in urine and f***s in his back end!!
His wonderful foster bathed him and spent over an hour pulling off ticks. The bath water was brown and bloody and when the water drained the tub was littered with ticks. (Since Facebook won't let you post videos and images in the same post we will post the "after bath" photos in a subsequent post.).
Snoopy is headed to Salt Lake Friday and has surgery scheduled on Monday with the amazing team at Granite veterinary specialists.
Snoopy's story has a happy ending because people stepped up and showed up! There are 100s of dogs in that awful shelter (and shelters throughout the country) that need help. Please consider helping when and where you can! Saving one dog cannot change the world, but for that one dog, the world will be furever changed! Snoopy can attest to that! 🐾💙
