We like to think that wildlife isn't aware of the , but there are signs. 🕷️🕸️ Did you know, the western United States is home to more than 1,500 spider species? 😱 However, never fear. A healthy landscape supports enough birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and other predators to keep these creepy crawlers in check while they do their job of controlling insect populations—the ultimate balancing act!

In the spirit of the , let's talk about bats! 🦇 Utah is home to 18 native bat species managed and protected by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Because all bat species in the state are protected by law, it is illegal to intentionally kill or harm them.

This time of year, some of Utah's bats migrate to southern locations. However, as overnight temperatures drop and insects disappear, most resident species settle into a state of torpor and hibernate during the winter months. 🦇 Unlike the large-group cave hibernation observed in the eastern part of the country, Utah bats typically hibernate alone or in small groups inside of caves, abandoned mines or cliff rock crevices. Canyonlands Natural History Association Discovery Pool grants support groundbreaking science in and around Moab and the Colorado Plateau. If you or someone you know has a great science idea, please apply: https://cnha.org/discovery-pool/

Applications are now open for CNHA’s 2027 Discovery Pool grants! 🔬🏜️

Since 2007, the Discovery Pool has supported research partnerships between qualified scientists and CNHA’s National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service partners in southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado.

Individual projects may receive up to $30,000 per year to support research that helps expand our understanding of the lands and resources our federal partners manage.

Applications must include a letter of support from one of CNHA’s local federal land management partners and are due by 5pm on November 1, 2026.

The is the perfect time to celebrate the common raven (Corvus corax). 🐦‍⬛ During the fall, these permanent, year-round Utah residents are especially active in national parks and desert areas where they are known to flock together to ward off cooling temperatures, solidify social networks and even communicate about food sources. Common ravens are also well-known for playful flight maneuvers during the cooler months, including barrel rolls, soaring on updrafts, chasing each other and flying upside down. Have you seen any of these acrobatics?
