The entire Cultural Fire Events team would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the SLC Air Protectors for their many years of service, advocacy, and dedication to the community. Their work has made a lasting impact throughout Native communities, and we are incredibly thankful for the foundation they have built.

As the SLC Air Protectors begin the process of closing their doors, Cultural Fire Events is honored to continue carrying forward several of their meaningful initiatives and programs. This includes plans to revive the Garden Initiative for Native American communities, as well as the Running As Medicine Prayer Run.

Thank you again to the SLC Air Protectors for your leadership, kindness, and unwavering commitment to uplifting Native American people and communities. Your legacy and impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Connecting through Music: Native American Program Students Craft Traditional Hand Drums

Students from the Jordan School District Native American Program recently gathered for a powerful hands-on workshop led by Jacob Crane, Executive Director of the nonprofit Cultural Fire Events. Under Mr. Crane’s guidance, students crafted their own traditional hand drums using maple wood and deer hide. The event was designed to be more than a lesson on making musical instruments, it served as a way to build cultural bonds among the District’s Native American students. Mr. Crane, who has taught traditional dance for over 20 years, shared how these instruments bridge communities and preserve ancestral songs.

By the end of the session, each student walked away with a custom drum they had laced and stretched by hand. The workshop provided a space for students to connect with their identity and learn the technical skills of a centuries-old art form.

Great job to the staff in the Jordan Native American Education Program for creating such a meaningful event, and thank you to Jacob Crane for sharing his decades of expertise. This event was a great way for students to carry forward the traditions of native song and drum.

🌟 Thank You To Our Sponsors! 🌟

Cultural Fire Events would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our amazing sponsors — Utah Division of Indian Affairs, Moab Arts & Culture, and the Moab RAP Grant — for supporting our Dancing with Traditions event.

Your continued commitment to celebrating and uplifting Indigenous culture helps keep our stories, songs, and dances alive for future generations. We’re honored to bring our community together through dance, culture, and tradition — and it wouldn’t be possible without your generous support.

Friendly reminder, the Moab (Red Canyon Powwow) is cancelled this year. We are having a one hour performance on Friday for the community, but thats all. Sorry folks.

Dear Cultural Fire Events Community,

By now, some of you have probably heard that we are announcing the cancellation of the 2025 Red Canyon Powwow. This decision was not made lightly, and after much thought and discussion, we felt it was important to be transparent with you—our community that we deeply respect and serve.

Over the past years, the Moab and Grand County community has welcomed us with open arms, helping us create a space where culture, connection, and celebration could thrive. Your support has meant everything to us, and we are deeply grateful for every dancer, singer, vendor, volunteer, sponsor, donor, and attendee who has helped make this event so special.

Unfortunately, changes in funding this year have made it impossible to provide the experience and quality our community deserves. Without the necessary resources, we are unable to host the powwow at the level of excellence that reflects its spirit and significance.

While we are sad to cancel the powwow this year, we are excited to announce “Dancing with Traditions”, a smaller community event hosted by Cultural Fire Events, which will take place. We invite the Moab and Grand County community to join us on Friday, October 17th, at 7 PM for an evening of dance, culture, and connection. This is our way of ensuring that the heart of the powwow remains alive and present in the community we love so much.

Thank you for your understanding, patience, and the love you have shown us year after year. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

With gratitude,
The Cultural Fire Events Team
