Last week, more than 200 community leaders, water experts, business professionals, and engaged Utahns gathered for Envision Utah's Spring Breakfast to discuss the future of the Great Salt Lake.

Together, we explored the challenges facing the lake, the progress already being made, and the opportunities ahead. We heard from Brian Steed, Josh Romney, and Cynthia Bee, who reminded us that while the work is significant, so is Utah's capacity for innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving.

"The world is watching. They're looking to see what we do in the Great Salt Lake." — Josh Romney

We’ve talked a lot about URMs, but what else do we need to consider when it comes to statewide seismic resilience? Things like water supply and infrastructure (including sewer) will be greatly affected for long periods of time in the aftermath of the Big One. Ever seen the Great Salt Lake explained with marbles? 👀💧

As explained by Envision Utah Planning Team member Cody Lutz, this interactive display shows how water flows in, where it goes, and how human use shapes the lake—highlighting both progress made and the work still ahead.

Want to check it out? You can see it in person at the Salt Lake County Government Center.

We’ve gotten a lot of questions about how to prepare a for The Big One. We know we need to have things like water supply, 72-hour kits, and food storage, but what about preparing in a way that makes our homes and communities more seismically resilient so we can bounce back better? Jessica talks a little bit about what this could look like. What other questions do you have? Comment them on this video!

Part 2 of our series on URM buildings! Utah has many of these buildings because building codes weren’t updated until the 1970s. Like Jessica mentions, these are buildings many of us can be in on a daily basis including homes, businesses, and even many of our schools. Curious how to find out if something is a URM building? See earthquakes.utah.gov/unreinforced-masonry/ to learn the signs!

04/14/2026

Have you ever heard of a URM building? Structural Engineer, Jessica Chappell, gives us a brief explanation of what URM (unreinforced masonry) buildings mean. These are buildings that are at a much higher risk of collapsing during an earthquake because of their lack of reinforcement in the structure. These are typically older structures from before building codes in Utah were updated in the 1970s. To learn more, visit our website or earthquakes.utah.gov!

A jingle might not seem like the way to prepare for an earthquake… but it might be exactly what gets people paying attention 🎶

With support from FEMA and an incredible creative team, the campaign is now running across TV and digital platforms, reaching communities along the Wasatch Fault through KSL, Fox 13, YouTube, and social platforms.

This work is about more than personal preparedness. It’s about helping Utah understand the infrastructure and planning needed to recover after a major earthquake.

We’ve even had the chance to join local media conversations to talk about what it means to truly “bounce back better.”

Because resilience isn’t just about getting through the disaster.
It’s about what happens after.
