We’re here at a USCIS event for Afghans here in Houston. A lot of people here to get clarity on their refugee and immigration cases. Made some new friends.

We are so happy to welcome Wali here to SLC. A former JTAC, it has been a long three years in hiding, middle of the night moves, document acquisition, and relocation from Afghanistan to a neighboring country, in preparation to resettle legally here in the U.S. Welcome Wali.

It’s hard to be a refugee of course. It takes years, not months, to formally resettle. We’re proud of this Afghan family who’ve done their best to adjust to a new culture, learn a new language, make new friends, and embrace a new country.

Within days of Brazil’s pause on Afghan humanitarian visas, Pakistan announced that Afghans not legally in the country would be deported. This has led to hundreds of thousands fleeing back to Afghanistan, including thousands that were born in Pakistan but resided in Pakistan illegally unable to get official refugee status.

Afghan families learning the language of their new home.

Today it was reported that Pakistan will seek to deport it’s Afghan refugees. This is not good news and comes on the heels of the announcement from Brazil that it has temporarily suspended humanitarian visas for Afghans.
