It has been a busy start to our Cavity Adopting Raptor Ecology Studies (CARES) season! Every spring and summer, we monitor hundreds of nest boxes throughout Utah, Arizona, and along the Washington-Idaho border, mainly monitoring American Kestrels and Western Screech-Owls. So far, our team and network of over 100 community scientists have discovered 198 active nest boxes! We’ve also put out USGS and color bands on 221 nestling owls and kestrels and 96 adults.

Want to help small cavity-nesting raptors in your area? Build a nest box! Click here to download the plans we use for our boxes: https://hawkwatch.org/research/north-american-programs/cares/nestboxguide/

These birds were handled for the purpose of scientific research under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey and in accordance with all state permitting requirements.

Our Adopt-a-Hawk program has been around for a long time! It was one of the first ways we fundraised for our raptor migration monitoring sites. The package may look a little different these days, but you still receive a certificate with information on an actual wild raptor banded on one of our research programs! Speaking of, our Father’s Day sale on Adopt-a-Hawks is still running. Use the code “PAPABIRD” at checkout for 30% off until June 14th: https://hawkwatch-international.myshopify.com/discount/PAPABIRD?redirect=%2Fcollections%2Fadopt-a-hawk

To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we're taking a hike down memory lane to celebrate our shared success and remember all the people and places that helped us get to where we are today. Share your memories with us with for a chance to be included in this HWI history project.

Their wingspan reaches 19 inches, and they weigh at most around 5 ounces. Have you ever heard or seen this species?

Women want me, fish fear me.

Did you know that Ospreys have specialized feet for grasping fish? All four talons are curved more so than on other raptors, and the toes have tiny spines or “spicules” on the bottom that help them hang on to their slippery prey.

Since HawkWatch International was founded, education has always existed alongside our research. And the stars behind it? Non-releasable Raptor Ambassadors! To honor their legacy, we’ve added a page to our website memorializing the birds who helped educate hundreds of thousands of learners and advocate for the protection of their species.
