Thank you to Utah Mining Association for presenting us with the 2024 Community Partner Award. This award is presented to non-member companies and/or programs that support UMA’s education efforts to successfully build greater understanding and public support for Utah’s mining industries-emphasizing that mining is crucial for modern life.
✨️
When our chapter was founded in June of 2020, we quickly realized there was a need to support education-based community programs throughout the state. Many of our members reside in the Salt Lake Valley, and have served as Mining Ambassadors, educated classrooms, served as mentors, and donated volunteer hours to support outreach events.
✨️
It is thanks to established groups like Utah Mining Association, the United Way, Utah STEM EXPO, and most importantly, the volunteer and outreach efforts from our chapter members, that we were able to accept this award.
✨️
We believe educating the community on why our industry is so impactful can provide a path for the up-and-coming generation to create an equitable and diverse workforce that supports each piece of the mining industry.
✨️
Thank you, UMA for believing in us! 🎉

For we want to honor the first in who paved the way for us, illuminating the in their wake.

1863: Grubstaker Mrs. Robert K. Reid discovered a vein of silver ore and filed a claim in her own name in Bingham Canyon, Utah - one of the largest mines in the US.

1896: The revealed two teachers, Annie A. Coffin and Stella L. Godspeed, hiked 35 miles into the Cascade Range carrying packs of equipment and revolvers where they discovered a rich mining property.

1965: President LBJ signed executive order 11246 stating coal companies with federal contracts couldn’t discriminate in employment for a person’s race or s*x.

1972: President Nixon signed the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, allowing women to be more forceful with discrimination charges against coal companies.

1974: Diana Baldwin and Anita Cherry become the first underground coal miners as part of the United Mine Workers of America.

Between 1974-1980, nearly 2,400 women were hired to work in the underground industry along the Eastern US.
