400 years later and religion reacts the same way.
Excommunication for people contradicting the church, and educational institutions being expected to fall inline when research contradicts church leaders. (look up recent news about BYU and the new LDS Church education director)

Fight your own confirmation bias. if it "feels true" don't just accept it as true. In the sea of propaganda and misinformation it is always important to analyze extraordinary claims. sometimes even trivial claims.

meme thieved from unofficial Neil deGrasse Tyson group.
I think we've all been there. I know I've felt personally insulted many times when a group I identify with is criticized. Very difficult to remember its probably not about you at all and not take insult from generalizations.

What is a cult? How are cults different from religions? And why do many religious scholars say we shouldn’t even use that label? In this episode of Crash Cou...

It is so very difficult to communicate to indoctrinated members that you have been on their side of the argument, you know how they feel and the mental gymnastics they will use. And true to the dunning krueger effect, the arrogance of assuming they have all the answers because they *feel* its true is actually very disrespectful.

When StarTalk (Neil DeGrasse Tyson and crew) needs to call an expert, they frequently call on Dr Liu. I'm actually surprised that at this moment Dr Liu himself has less than 3K subs. So go check it out and subscribe.

I can't help but think about this in the context of religion.
This is basically a philosophical explainer about the appeal to authority bias. the "subject who is supposed to know" i.e. outsourcing the responsibility of "having the answers" to a person or organization.
nobody has all the answers. and nobody can just intuitively know anything is true. that is why the scientific method exists.
IMO its much better when the people that are "supposed to know" are honest about what they don't actually know.
