The countdown has begun for an extraordinary display of unity and inclusion as Navajo Nation in Monument Valley prepares to host its first-ever Special Olympics Utah Law Enforcement Torch Run on May 8th, 2024!
A symbol of hope and perseverance, the Special Olympics Torch Run brings together Navajo law enforcement officers, athletes, volunteers, and supporters to champion inclusivity and celebrate the remarkable achievements of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
The torch run will begin at 10:30 AM at Forest Gump Hill, located among the massive buttes and towers that make up Monument Valley, where Forrest Gump suddenly finished his ultra-marathon of more than 15,000 miles in the 1994 film starring Tom Hanks. Torchbearers will then carry the Special Olympics Flame of Hope from Monument Valley High School to Tsé Bii' Ndzisgaii Community Center for a post-run celebration.
"The Torch Run is more than just a run," said Tyrell Holiday, Special Olympics Utah’s Navajo Nation Health and Fitness Specialist, "it's a celebration of diversity, acceptance, and the boundless potential of every individual to overcome challenges and achieve greatness. It serves as a powerful reminder that when we come together, we can break down barriers and build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
"We invite everyone in and near Monument Valley to join us for this momentous occasion," added Scott Weaver, Special Olympics Utah President and CEO. "Together, let's light the way towards a brighter, more inclusive future for youth and adults with intellectual disabilities everywhere.”
