When the life of someone you love is at stake you stay with them. This is the ethos behind the annual Vigil for Great Salt Lake, now in its 5th year, hosted by the Making Waves Artist Collaborative.

“Join the Making Waves Artist Collaborative for the 5th annual Vigil for Great Salt Lake!

Celebrate the Species every Friday at 5 pm from January 23rd to March 6th at the capitol building.
 Walk the Waves on Tuesday, January 20th, at 8 am (opening day) and every subsequent Monday at 8 am from January 26th to March 2nd at the capitol building.

We can’t wait for you to meet the new baby bison, kestrel, and coyote puppets!”

No doubt — we need technical, legal, and policy changes to support the Great Salt Lake’s restoration — but ultimately, this is a values problem.

This crisis demands a cultural and spiritual reorientation, a shift in how we understand ourselves and our place in the larger whole. Without a strong cultural foundation, laws and policies can only get us so far.

As we enter the next season of this work, we’re excited to share some of the values that guide us.

Want to learn how to lobby your representatives and make your voice heard?

Join us for Great Salt Lake Lobby Days, every Monday morning throughout the 2026 Utah Legislative Session from January 26rd - March 2nd (excluding President’s Day).

We’ll meet each week at 9 am in the Seagull Room (East Senate Building) and provide a brief rundown of the latest legislation and issues related to Great Salt Lake, along with a short lobby training before breaking into teams and heading out to talk with legislators.

There’s so much power in the community that’s building around Great Salt Lake and the momentum is on our side. Our state leaders have called for the lake’s restoration by 2034 and we’re here to hold them accountable – we need your voice!

Save the date!! We’re back at the Utah State Capitol for our 5th annual Rally to Save Our Great Salt Lake on Saturday, January 31st at 12 pm.

It’s hard to believe this is #5. This movement has come such a long way AND – we’re just getting started. This is long work. There’s so much power in the community that’s building around Great Salt Lake and the momentum is on our side. Our state leaders have called for the lake’s restoration by 2034 and we’re here to hold them accountable.

Join us on Jan. 31st as we celebrate, reflect on where we’ve been, and set our sights on the road ahead.

We need water to the lake. We need deep cultural paradigm shifts and systems change. We need a movement bigger than anything we’ve yet seen here in Utah.

Here’s the truth: we are not on track for a healthy Great Salt Lake. The lake is just one hot summer away from falling back into what Dr. Bonnie Baxter calls “the scary zone”—the same danger zone we were in the year before the lake hit its historic low. Without significant intervention, we could be staring down another record low as soon as next year.

Still, the momentum is on our side. And there’s so much power in the community that’s formed around Great Salt Lake. We’re renewing our focus and recommitting to long-term stewardship—for the lake, for the beings who call its ecosystem home, for our communities, our air, our future.

We hope you’ll stay in this work with us—sharing your thoughts, inviting others in, and helping us spread the word as we build momentum for our 1/31 Rally.

Our lake-facing community is the foundation of this movement.

Gather with us this Saturday, Nov 12th at Black Rock, as we slow down with the shifting seasons, and foster our collective connection and attunement with Great Salt Lake.

We’ll meet at 2:30 pm for the potluck, and qi gong starts at 4:30.

Come for the whole time or just a part — this will be casual with plenty of time to explore the lake as you please.
