John hasn’t had a birth certificate in 15 years, until we paid for a new one for him to be shipped from Florida. 🙌🏽 For just $48, thanks to your donations ❤️🙏🏽, John can finally get his ID, stop working under the table and get a well-paying full-time job, and pay child support again and better support himself and his family. 🤗 This is the power of our humble nonprofit; such an inexpensive bureaucratic hurdle overcome through compassion in action! ✊🏽 (Please remember, even if he knew how to apply for one on his own, without an ID you can’t open a bank account and have a debit or credit card to even pay the $48 Vital Chek fee … he can’t mail cash to a records office. Often, the lack of an out of state birth certificate and any form of ID isn’t just a cost issue, but a bureaucratic hurdle one can’t overcome on one’s own.) Ever wondered why homeless people have a lot of stuff?

When you're experiencing homelessness, everything you own carries a completely different kind of weight.
It’s common to see folks carrying multiple bags or holding onto items that others might view as clutter. But when you’ve experienced severe loss, extreme poverty, or the constant threat of having your belongings stolen or thrown away, holding onto items becomes a survival mechanism

For many unhoused individuals, compulsive saving can stem directly from trauma and deep attachment disturbances. Compulsive saving frequently traces back to Adverse Childhood Experiences and material deprivation. When physical safety and emotional security have been absent, physical objects often step in as a substitute for safety and control. Items represent stability, comfort, and a tangible sense of identity when everything else has been stripped away.

When you’ve gone without necessities for so long, a strong instinct takes over: 'I might need this later,’ or ‘better take this just in case’

We notice this with our clients who are newly housed and that’s why our staff receive training around hoarding in supporting clients in finding the root cause of this habit to help them regulate the compulsion

Another epic getting things organized and prepped for tomorrow’s at Madsen Park (1000 W & S Temple), 3-6pm. We love our epic team so much!!!!! 5 straight hours of putting clothing into men’s tops, men’s bottoms, women’s tops, women’s bottoms, accessories bedding and hygiene all separated is a lot. Our monthly drives wouldn’t exist without all this behinds the scenes work, good thing we have such a great time when the tribe gets together, with ‼️❤️🙏🏽 PLEASE JOIN US?!?
