On September 17, we’ll celebrate the ribbon cutting and open house for The Other Side Prep School and the Pat and Florence King Family Self-Reliance House.

The Prep School serves an important purpose: helping individuals prepare for Village life.

It’s a place to build the skills, relationships, accountability, confidence, and sense of purpose needed to become a successful member of the Village community.

Because moving into a home is just the beginning.

Building a life is the real goal.

That’s what we’re building at The Other Side Village.

Not just housing alone.

Community. Purpose. Opportunity.
Connection. Hope.

📍 630 E 100 S, Salt Lake City
📅 September 17
🎤 Program: 3:30–4:00 PM
🏡 Open House: 4:00–5:00 PM

We were honored to partner with HomeAid Utah to host their annual Diaper Drive Extravaganza on Friday at The Other Side Village.

It was the perfect day for an event like this and a whole lot of diapers coming together to support Utah families who need them most.

And then, just to keep things interesting, a torrential downpour hit about five minutes after we wrapped up. Perfect timing.

Big thanks to HomeAid Utah, their volunteers, partners, and everyone who showed up to make a difference.

We love seeing The Other Side Village become a place where people come together and strengthen the community.

It was a great example of what happens when we do it together.

Today is a pretty special day at The Other Side Donuts

We’re celebrating National Nonprofit Day with the soft opening of our newest location at Trailhead student housing on the The University of Utah campus.

And we’re bringing more than donuts…

We’re also launching our new savory menu, featuring paninis, flatbreads, breakfast croissants, mini charcuterie boxes, and more.

But the most important thing on the menu is something you can’t see:

Opportunity.

Every purchase helps create meaningful employment and second chances for people who have experienced chronic homelessness and are rebuilding their lives at The Other Side Village

That’s the power of a social enterprise. We serve award-winning donuts and create great jobs and change lives at the same time.

So on National Nonprofit Day, come grab a donut and support a mission.

A whole lot of good happening on the other side.

Welcome to campus, The Other Side Donuts.

Many people ask what we mean when we say The Other Side Village is a Democratic Therapeutic Community (DTC).

Here’s what it means:

A Democratic Therapeutic Community isn’t built on the idea that professionals “fix” people. It’s built on the belief that people change through community.

At The Other Side Village, members share decision-making responsibilities, use daily meetings to build self-awareness, and focus on mutual accountability rather than relying solely on traditional medical authority. Every person is both a learner and a teacher. We call it “Each One Teach One.”

The Democratic Therapeutic Community model is built on six core principles:

• Democratization – Every person has a voice, shares responsibility, and helps shape the culture of the community.

• Permissiveness – Mistakes become opportunities for growth. Challenges are addressed with accountability and learning rather than shame or punishment.

• Reality Confrontation – Residents respectfully give and receive honest feedback, helping one another develop greater self-awareness and responsibility.

• Communalism – Living, working, eating, and serving together builds trust, belonging, and lasting relationships.

• Culture of Inquiry – Every interaction is an opportunity to reflect, ask questions, learn, and grow.

• Daily Coaching – Behavior change is developed through ongoing coaching, immediate feedback, and consistent practice in everyday situations, helping members replace old patterns with healthy new behaviors.

The “therapeutic” part isn’t just about counseling sessions. It’s about creating an environment where everyday life becomes the catalyst for transformation.

Recovery isn’t something that’s done to people. It’s something people accomplish with each other.

That’s why we don’t just build homes, we build a community where people discover purpose, develop leadership, and create lasting change together.

When people belong, contribute, and are expected to grow, transformation becomes possible.
