July 30th marks World Day Against Human Trafficking, a campaigns started by the United Nations that looks to raise awareness to the global crises of human trafficking. With recent years bringing about crises, conflicts, and pandemics around the world, there has been a great displacement of people around the world. These events have thus lead to a higher increase in human trafficking. We ask that you help fight against this global epidemic by supporting local organizations and raising awareness to the human trafficking crisis.

In the article "Human Trafficking and Minorities: Vulnerability Compounded by Discrimination" author Heidi Box highlights the key role of minority discrimination as a factor in creating human trafficking vulnerabilities. While research is limited, it is undeniable that there is a correlation between minority populations and human trafficking vulnerabilities. Minority status may not be the only reason for explotation, however, it does raise the risk for an individual to be exploited. To better understand this relationship please read her article. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July to bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. Mental heath includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, and determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Racial and ethnic minorities often suffer from poor mental health outcomes due to multiple factors, including lack of access to quality mental health care services, cultural stigma surrounding mental health care, discrimination, and overall lack of awareness about mental health. World Refugee Day was founded in 2000 by the United Nations and is celebrated every year on June 20th. This holiday has been put into place to recognize and admire the courage of those who have been forced to leave their homes to avoid conflict or persecution. Currently, the world is seeing the highest levels of displacement on record. There is an estimated 70.8 million people worldwide who have been forced from their home. Of these refugees over half are under the age of 18. On top of these numbers, we also see millions of individuals who are considerded stateless and are being denied basic human rights. These rising numbers emphasize the need for recognition and support of these millions of individuals. We encourage those in the community to find ways to support refugees and get involved!
