Major Joe Lewis Thompson, USMC, who inspired me to follow my dreams and not just talk about them. JLT Fieldhouse, Inc., a nonprofit organization, offers year round intense one on one and team oriented basketball training as well as lessons in leadership, teamwork, goal setting and overcoming obstacles. While we primarily focus on the basics of the game of basketball, we also work on developing cro

ss-over athletic skills, building self esteem and the value of team success over individual achievement. Our major contributions to the community will be mentoring and coaching of life skills and establishing a foundation to provide educational assistance to JLT Fieldhouse, Inc. participants and nonparticipants alike.

8 years ago, Emma Cornelison was one of my players. Today, she's starting a brand new chapter, and she took the time to write me this. Coaching was never just about basketball for me, it's about the relationships that outlast the season, the team, even the sport itself.

My reply to her: "Emma, the honor was always mine. Thank you for your trust, your loyalty, and for letting me watch you grow into who you are today. Go get this new chapter. I'm still your #1 fan. Love you too, Dawg."

When Someone Uses a Name to Get to Me

I recently received a message that used the name of a young woman I mentored — someone I poured into, coached, and helped develop as a person and an athlete.

At first, I thought: maybe they genuinely want to know about her journey. But when I asked what the question actually was... they pitched me. A sales conversation disguised as curiosity.

Here's what I want every young leader, every professional, and every human being to know:

✔️ Someone's name is not a networking tool. It's not a conversation starter for someone else's sales pitch.
✔️ Real relationships begin with genuine curiosity — not manipulation.
✔️ If someone doesn't take the time to understand your work before they reach out, they're not connecting with you — they're connecting with what they think they can get from you.

I want to challenge everyone reading this: when you reach out to someone, ask yourself — am I genuinely curious about them, or just what they can do for me?

Your answer to that question will determine the quality of every relationship you build.

40 years. Thousands of young people. One mission that never changed.

To coach not just the game — but the person playing it.

I've coached kindergartners, middle school, high school, AAU, and college players. Preteens navigating middle school and teens navigating life. Every single one of them taught me something.

But the lesson that never changes?

Every young person is more capable than they believe themselves to be.

The problem was never ability. It was the gap between who they were and who they had been equipped to become.

That gap is the work. That gap is why I show up every single day.

"Everything I have ever built traces back to one man.

His name was Sgt. Maj. Joe Lewis Thompson. My father."
He served the United States Marine Corps for 30 years, from 1960 to 1990. Two Tours of Vietnam. Decades of sacrifice in places most people will never see, doing things most people will never fully understand.

But what I remember most isn't the uniform.

It's the example.

His commitment to selfless service. To giving without expecting anything in return. To showing up for others — completely, consistently, without condition. That wasn't just who he was in the Corps. That was who he was every single day.

That became my blueprint.

JLT Fieldhouse, Inc., the nonprofit I founded, bears his initials. J. L. T. Not because I needed a name. Because he deserves to be remembered in every life we touch. Every young person who comes through this program carries a piece of his legacy forward, whether they know it or not. That matters to me more than I can put into words.

-I don't coach because it's a career.
-I don't mentor because it's a calling.
-I do this because of him.

Because someone poured into me — completely, selflessly, without keeping score — and it changed the entire trajectory of my life. And I have never been able to justify keeping that to myself.

Every module in Beyond the Classroom™. Every conversation on the court. Every word I've ever written or spoken to a young person who needed to hear it, it all traces back to one man who showed me what it looks like to live for something bigger than yourself.

Pops, JLT Fieldhouse is for you. It will always be for you.

And we meant every word of it. But here's what nearly 40 years of working with young people has taught me:
Love is not enough to build confidence. It's necessary — but it's not sufficient.

Confidence in a teenager is built through experience, reflection, and repetition — not reassurance.

When your child learns to communicate clearly, set real goals, and follow through on their commitments — confidence shows up naturally. It's the byproduct of becoming someone they can count on.

Themselves.

That's the work we do in Beyond the Classroom™. Not hype. Not highlights. The actual building blocks that turn a capable kid into a young person who knows they're capable.

This is what happens when you invest in a young person who is already changing the world. 💛 In the summer of 2023, Megumi Oishi — a freshman, Fencer, and body shaming activist — sat down with Keith Senzer and Antwaun Thompson on the TeenSpeak podcast. She was already remarkable. But she shared that our conversation helped her step even further outside her comfort zone, pursue more public speaking and advocacy opportunities, and ultimately win the Big Ten Jackie Robinson Community and Impact Award at Northwestern. She has now graduated with honors in English Literature and earned a full scholarship to Notre Dame Law School. 🎓 For every educator, coach, counselor, and parent reading this — never underestimate the power of a single conversation. Behind every "Coach T" moment, there's a "Mrs. Coach T" making it happen. đź’›

This week, our 5th–9th grade campers wrapped up an incredible week of growth — Tournament Friday, certificates, gift bags with each camper's name, photos to remember the week by, and camp t-shirts to wear with pride.

What the kids didn't know walking in is that every single one of those gift bags was put together, by hand, by my wife.
She wasn't able to be at camp this week — but she was there in every detail. Every name written, every bag packed, every shirt folded was her saying "you matter" to kids she may never even meet face to face.

That's who she is. That's who she's always been for this mission.
So before we handed out a single certificate, I told our campers and their families the truth: none of this happens without her. And I asked them to do something simple — look into a camera and say thank you.
This is for her.

Twenty plus years ago, I made a promise to carry forward my father's words: "If you ever see that someone needs help, you do it, without hesitation and without any expectation of reward." My wife has lived that promise right alongside me, quietly, faithfully, without ever asking for the spotlight.

JLT Fieldhouse exists because of a lot of hands. Hers are some of the most important.
