North Carolina held its first Games in 1970 in Burlington with 100 athletes from across the state competing that year. Then in 1971, Special Olympics North Carolina, Inc., was chartered to administer the Special Olympics movement in the state. In June of 1999, North Carolina hosted one of the most successful Special Olympics World Summer Games. Special Olympics North Carolina is one of the largest volunteer-driven sports organizations in the US with over 20,000 volunteers.
