North Carolina held its first Games in 1970 in Burlington with 100 athletes from across the state competing that year. Then in 1971, Special Olympics North Carolina, Inc., was chartered to administer the Special Olympics movement in the state. th Carolina is one of the largest volunteer-driven sports organizations in the US with over 20,000 volunteers. It is the second largest Special Olympics program in North America and one of the largest in the world serving over 38,000 athletes. North Carolina is divided into six areas that consist of over 100 local programs. These areas and local programs are accredited by SONC which maintains its headquarters in Raleigh. The Raleigh office provides state-level, area, divisional and invitational competition, as well as coach, volunteer, and athlete training.

Hello everyone! Special Olympics Rowan County bowling will be canceled for this evening February 2nd due to hazardous road conditions. We will resume practice next Monday February 9th weather permitting. Everyone stay safe and warm!
