National Coming Out Day was established in 1988 by activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary. They chose October 11 to commemorate the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights. The core idea is rooted in the belief that homophobia and prejudice thrive in an atmosphere of silence. When people realize they have loved ones, coworkers, or neighbors who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, they are far more likely to embrace supportive views.
