One week to go!
The Lakeville Open horse show is scheduled for Sunday, September 7th. Be there!
This horse show has run continuously for the last 67 years, making this event the 68th time it is being held. The show is open to the public and admission is free; you can come for a quick
look or stay for the day, as we have a food truck and bake sale on the premises, as well as port-a-potties, always a useful feature.
The show is a real family event, always interesting, sometimes quite exciting (think chills and spills) and appropriate for all ages. The show is the principal fund-raising event for The Lakeville
Pony Club, and the members and their families work hard to make this event a highly enjoyable day out for all spectators as well as the show’s many competitors.
Here’s a quick primer on how the classes are judged. This will help you figure out which horse or rider should win the class, and you’ll see how close you get to the judge’s decision when the
results of the class of announced over the loudspeaker. There will be programs at the show that will help you know “who’s who” of the competitors.
1. Equitation classes are judging the rider only, whether it’s someone under 18 or an adult. Beginning riders, usually the youngest, will just walk and trot. As they become more
proficient, they also canter and finally jump – from very small fences to ones that are 2’3”.
2. Hunters are jumping horses that are judged on how smoothly they go over the fences.
3. Jumpers are judged on how well they can jump a fence without knocking down a rail. In some classes, they are additionally judged on how quickly they can jump all the jumps on the course, and an official timer has a stopwatch to make sure the time is accurate.
4. And finally, a few really fun classes, like the costume class, where both the horse and rider are wearing costumes. May the most creative one win!
The show starts at 8:00 AM and will run to approximately 5:00 P.M. The stable and its grounds are at Riga Meadow at Coole Park, 1031 Bangall Amenia Road, Millbrook, NY.
