The story behind the Sheila Zimmer Breast Screening Fund is one rooted in family, legacy and a desire to help others.

Joe and John Zimmer recently joined TidalHealth VP/CPO & Foundation President Jessica Hales on DelmarvaLife to share more about their mother, Sheila, the impact she had on those around her and why the Zimmer family chose to establish this fund in her memory.

The Sheila Zimmer Breast Screening Fund helps uninsured and underinsured patients access essential breast screenings and related services through diagnosis across the TidalHealth system.

Throughout October, the Zimmer family will match donations to the fund up to $25,000 — doubling the impact for patients in our community.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the TidalHealth Foundation is going PINK in support of greater access to breast care across our community!

The Sheila Zimmer Breast Screening Fund helps uninsured and underinsured patients receive breast screenings and related services through diagnosis. In its first year alone, the fund helped 46 patients access important breast health services across the TidalHealth system.

After receiving a toy from Brooke’s Toy Closet during a visit to the emergency department, one young patient wanted to help bring that same comfort to other children. She and her family recently paid the kindness forward by donating a colorful collection of squishies for children receiving care at TidalHealth.

We are so grateful for their thoughtful donation and the joy it will bring to our youngest patients.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and honor the first responders, healthcare professionals and everyday heroes who answered an unimaginable moment with courage and compassion.

Their spirit of service reminds us of the responsibility we share every day — to care for one another, strengthen our communities and be there when we are needed most.
