Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley delivers nutritious meals to homebound seniors. Our name changed in 1998 to reflect our expanded service area.

Our goals are to improve the health and well-being of our clients and help them remain in their homes and maintain their independence. We’re an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that was founded in 1972 and incorporated in 1985 as Meals on Wheels of Salinas. We’ve been delivering meals in Salinas since 1973 and in the rural areas of the Salinas Valley since 1994. We believe that good nutrition and independent living go hand in hand, and with the help of our caring volunteers and generous donors we make both possible everyday for those who are homebound. Seniors in Greenfield gathered at the Greenfield Veterans Memorial Hall for the monthly SOCOS (SOuth COunty Senior) Social, an event hosted by Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley in collaboration with City of Greenfield CA. Today, the hall was decked out with an autumn theme and many took photos at the photo backdrop. We thank the The Food Bank for Monterey County for providing a delicious lunch of pozole with all the trimmings as well as providing boxes of fresh produce for each senior to take home with them. The spotlight speaker for the day was Monterey-Salinas Transit and additional agencies in attendance included: Mee Memorial Healthcare System; Legal Services for Seniors;nCentral Coast VNA & Hospice; and Central Coast Center for Independent Living.

There was a full house at the Soledad Community Center for the monthly SOCOS (SOuth COunty Senior) Social. Guests enjoyed a delicious lunch of Chicken Pozole with all the trimmings. A few of the seniors dressed up in festive attire for the upcoming Halloween/Fall holiday and were awarded a box of See’s Candy for participating! Thanks go to the The Food Bank for Monterey County for preparing a wonderful meal and providing boxes of fresh produce for each senior to take home with them. We are grateful for the help and planning each month provided by the Soledad Recreation Department staff. Our spotlight speaker for the event was Monterey-Salinas Transit. Additional agencies in attendance included: Mee Memorial Healthcare System; Salinas Valley Recycles - SVSWA; The Live Well Project; Central Coast VNA & Hospice and Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley.

Do you need greeting cards but don’t like paying $4.99 or more for one? MOWSV is having a fundraiser - come to our office and choose from a variety of cards (birthday, get well, wedding, baby shower, anniversary, thank you and more!) — 10 cards for $10 and 25 cards for $20 or pick as many as you would like and make a donation! Stop by our office on Abbott Street any Monday thru Thursday between 8am-4:30pm and browse the hundreds of cards looking for a home. Everyone welcomed!!

Earlier, we were surprised by a delivery of birthday gift bags created for our seniors. Each bag was filled with items such as socks, puzzles, tissues, candies, lip balm and more to be given to our homebound seniors on their birthdays. We thank this group from Salinas Valley Community Church who spent their time and money filling bags for our clients - this was one of a number of service projects taken on by members of the church. Receiving these gift bags allows us to continue to celebrate birthdays with a little gift for each senior on their special day, something that we may not be able to do without this community help. Thank you Salinas Valley Community Church!

The seniors at Los Abuelitos Senior Apartments were happy to share a lunch together at the monthly SASSO Senior Social, our collaboration with Chispa Housing. We are grateful for the support from CHISPA staff. We also thank The Food Bank for Monterey County for providing a delicious lunch - today was Pozole - as well as boxes of fresh produce for all seniors to take with them. Seniors were up and dancing to the songs of Soto, Jr., the entertainer for the event. Spotlight speaker was Representative Zoe Lofgren’s Field representative. Additional agencies in attendance included: Monterey-Salinas Transit; Hospice of Santa Cruz County; Central California Alliance for Health; Health Projects Center; Central Coast VNA & Hospice; and Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley.

Castroville Senior Center hosted a “Salsa Making Contest” and our Alison Samuels, Program Manager at MOWSV, was one of the guest judges! All salsas entered in the contest must be home made and prizes were awarded to the top 3 salsas. This was a fun event for seniors and Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley was honored to be an important part.

King City seniors kicked off the month of October at the King City Recreation Department SOCOS social, an event by Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley! We thank all of the agencies that collaborate with us to make these events happen each month for local seniors - thank you to the staff of King City Recreation Department, The Food Bank for Monterey County for providing a fresh lunch and boxes of produce for each senior to leave with and Bonner - entertainer who gets seniors up and dancing with her energetic songs. The spotlight speaker for the day was Alliance On Aging. Additional agencies in attendance included: Legal Services for Seniors; Monterey-Salinas Transit; Central Coast Center for Independent Living; United Way Monterey County; Mee Memorial Healthcare System and Meals on Wheels Salinas Valley.

Seniors at Chispa Housing - Sherwood Village enjoyed a tasty lunch provided by The Food Bank for Monterey County and entertainment by Bonner at today’s SASSO - SAlinas Seniors SOcial! Many were up dancing and having a great time.
