Since 1997, the Network has led a statewide movement of local, state, and national partners collectively working toward improving the health status of 7 million low-income California parents and children. Multiple venues are used to facilitate behavior change in homes, schools, worksites, and communities to create environments that support fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity. Wit

h support from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Network now works with nearly 150 different public and non-profit agencies. This has enabled California to qualify for federal reimbursements for nutrition education starting at $2.8 million in 1997 and rising to nearly $110 million in 2011. About 80 percent of these funds support community-based programs directly.

September is California Pedestrian Safety Month. The Monterey County Injury Prevention Program reminds pedestrians of the following safety tips:

• Use crosswalks or intersections with a stop sign or signal.
• Make eye contact with drivers.
• Look left, right, left before stepping onto the street.
• Watch for turning cars.
• Be Smart. Be Safe. Be Seen.

Be Safe - Be Seen.

Be Safe - Be Seen.

Many of us plan walks after dinner. When walking at night or in low-light conditions, we need to see and be seen to be safe. Carry and use a flashlight so drivers can see you and you can see where you are walking. Wear reflective materials, a reflective vest, or place reflectors on your clothes. Seniors can also place reflective stickers on walkers or canes. Cross at crosswalks or intersections. Look across ALL lanes you must cross and make sure each lane is clear before proceeding. Look left, right, and left again before crossing. Just because one driver stops, don’t presume drivers in other lanes will stop for you. Remember see and be seen.
