Some residents in Monterey County will be impacted by a PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff.

The shutoff is expected to begin Saturday evening, October 26 about 10:00 p.m. and will last at least until Monday, October 28th. PG&E expects to begin re-energizing lines Monday afternoon, but delays may occur if there is powerline damage due to winds.

PG&E expects 9,000 customers in Monterey County to be impacted by this power shutoff, the majority of which are in the following areas:
• Aromas
• Royal Oaks
• Gabilan Acres/ San Juan Grade Road / Old Stage Rd to the San Benito County Border
• Gabilan Foothills Off of Old Stage Rd and Zabala Rd.
• Chualar,
• Gonzales
• Soledad
• Greenfield (outskirts)

Residents in the shutoff zone will receive a call from PG&E. If you are wondering if you will be impacted, you can check your address on the PG&E Webpage:

If you are not sure how to prepare for this power shutoff, the Monterey County Office of Emergency Services has information available and resources for assistance. You can access this via the county homepage at www.co.monterey.ca.us

All residents are also encouraged to prepare for power outages and other emergencies by creating an emergency kit and plan that includes flashlights, chargers and extra batteries, keeping their phone fully charged and gas tanks full, and checking on family, friends, and loved ones before, during and after the power shutoff occurs.

Impacted residents who depend on electricity should also contact PG&E, their care providers, and the local fire department if they need assistance running their electrical medical equipment during the power shutoff.
PG&E is directly contacting medically-dependent residents. If there are residents who cannot be reached, special efforts will be made at the County level to make contact.

PG&E is establishing Resource Centers for residents who need a place to charge their phones or other devices. The centers will also have water and snacks available. Those centers will be located at:

• Aromas Grange, 400 Rose Ave, Aromas, CA 95004 (Open 10/27 8:00am-8:00pm)
• Costco, 1339 N Davis Rd, Salinas, CA 93907 (Open 10/27 8:00am-8:00pm)

Many residents in this rural area are dependent on wells which require power; that will affect both people and livestock. If you need assistance with getting water to livestock, the SPCA of Monterey County is offering assistance. You can contact them at 831-372-2631.

Monterey County Office of Emergency Services will continue to monitor the situation and will post updates in the following locations:

Monterey County Gives!, the Weekly's annual charity campaign that supports the big ideas of local nonprofits, may still be five months away from launching, but it got a big new partner this week—one with a lot of history, and a lot of financial muscle behind it.

Girls' Health in Girls' Hands "alumna" Roxanna Sanchez (right) shared the story today of how a woman (whose name she didn't know) sat with her at the 2010 Women's Fund Breakfast and encouraged her to pursue a career in health. Roxanna (an SJSU student now studying health) was reunited with that guest, Morley Brown, at today's Women's Fund breakfast. Read more in the Herald blog by Claudia Melendez.
