Our Story
1 Village at at Time endeavors to break the cycle of poverty and disease 1 person, 1 family, 1 Village at a Time. The first official team visit to Africa was in 2008 with a trip to Uganda to the New Generation School where the team purchased desks for classrooms so that children could get up off the dirt floors. The team also visited with a women's group in Mukono with whom they had met on a previous trip. On this trip, they were able to assist in creating a craft co-op for hand made goods created by the women. Since that time we have also created a water system for the school to be shared with the local people of Namuwenje. We have purchased beds for a dormitory where the students could live and study for exams under the glow of a single light bulb powered by a small solar panel. We have provided books for a library, school books and supplies and sports equipment such as soccer and volley balls. We have also provided a scholarship for women to attend trade school to obtain a job.
The women's group, made up of abandoned and widowed women, has grown and is now in the process of creating a co-op farm that raises pigs and poultry. They call themselves Twegate Wamu: “Let us join together for the best”. 1 Village is helping these women to acquire land which they would own so they may become self sustainable. Our goal in helping the women of Twegate Wamu is to help assure they can raise themselves out of poverty and educate their children through hard work of their own.
