It was June 16th 2014.

Rose Filicetti stands quietly in the background, though her influence filled the whole room. That day marked the launch of the Coalition to End Human Trafficking, a moment made possible because Rose Filicetti encouraged me to take the leap.

She picked the spot for the first meeting, suggested who should be there, and made sure I wasn’t walking into it alone. At a time when I hardly knew anyone in the nonprofit world, Rose opened her network to me. She introduced me to partners, community leaders, and even my first political contact.

Her support didn’t just help me personally; it has had a real and lasting impact on survivors and on our community. Because of the foundation she helped to build, The Survivors Needs Fund has supported people with car payments, rent, utilities, and self-care, things that truly make it possible for survivors to rebuild their lives. And through our guest speakers and annual symposium, hundreds of service providers, first responders, law enforcement officers, and community members have been trained to better recognize and respond to trafficking.

We want her family to know that Rose Filicetti played a truly pivotal role in launching the Coalition to End Human Trafficking in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.

Her impact is immeasurable. It lives on in every survivor helped, every child protected, and every person now equipped to spot and prevent trafficking, simply because she chose to encourage me and share her generosity of spirit. Her legacy of compassion and action will continue to shape this work for years to come. We will never forget her.

Our First Film: Volunteers Needed — The Truth Behind Orphanage Voluntourism

https://risinginternational.liveimpact.org/li/8252/sevent/evt/home/289398/69

Across the globe, children are being trafficked through exploitative orphanages—taken from their families and communities, not because they are orphans, but because these institutions profit from well-meaning donations and volunteerism.
Shockingly, 80% of children in orphanages have at least one living parent. The consequences of forcibly separating children from their families, culture, and language are profound. These youth are thrust into relationships with well-intentioned but untrained and unvetted volunteers, who are misled into thinking they are offering hope and a better future.

Following the screening, join a Q&A discussion with filmmaker Barak Laub, and Jess Torres, a local human trafficking subject matter expert. Moderated by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin.
Fair trade crafts made by mothers around the world will be featured in the lobby.

You'll also learn about Rising Safe and Sound, a human trafficking prevention program implemented in Santa Cruz and Monterey county schools.

Tickets are free or option to donate to help end child trafficking and support survivors in Santa Cruz county.
Rising Worldwide's mission is to prevent and end poverty and exploitation.
