CASA of Monterey County Learn how you can be a CASA! What do CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) do for children in the foster care system?

CASA of Monterey County's mission is to train and support community volunteers who advocate for abused or neglected children placed in foster care, upholding the children's rights while pursuing a safe and permanent home. Understand and Support
How the child is doing: in their placement, in school, with friends and activities. Encourage
Introduce a child to healthy activities and model problem-solving skills. Empower
Encourage a child’s self expression; validate their feelings, fears, and beliefs. Keep Promises
Visit regularly and follow-up on what is important for the child. Make Connections
Find people who can be lifelong connections for the child. Promote Success
Work with teachers, schools, and foster parents for academic success. Report
Provide the Judge with detailed information with which to make decisions. A trained volunteer advocate (that might be you) reviews the case information and consults with their Advocate Supervisor as well as the other professionals on the team (social workers, attorneys, foster parents, group homes) to develop a case plan focusing on the priority issue for the child.

A look inside the classroom with our newest advocate cohort! 📝

Becoming a CASA takes real dedication. Before meeting their youth, every volunteer completes comprehensive training to understand the child welfare system and effective court reporting.

Giving youth in foster care space to unwind, try new things, and just enjoy being kids is a huge part of what we do. 💙

We recently took a group of youth out for a special self-care day, and local businesses came together to make it unforgettable:

🧼 (Del Monte Center) hosted hands-on self-care activities for the kids.
🍱Teriyaki Madness in Marina went above and beyond with a amazing spread for lunch.
🍰 Whole Foods Market in Monterey topped off the day with delicious desserts!

If you've spent time with CASA, you've probably met Armando Franco. 😎 As our Juvenile Justice Specialist and Advocate Supervisor, he spends his days supporting advocates and ensuring youth in the juvenile justice system have someone in their corner.

Outside of CASA, Armando is a local artist. His recent exhibit was inspired by the youth he works with every day, using art to explore the realities of trauma, resilience, and the difference one caring adult can make. Whether he's creating a mural, mentoring a volunteer, or spending time with his youth, his message is the same: everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and valued.
