Meet Leonela! πŸ’š

We're so excited to introduce Leonela, a dedicated member of the Salinas Valley Health Foundation family for the past three years!

"My favorite part of my job is collaborating with Children's Miracle Network corporate partners and local business owners to raise funds to support kids' health in the tri-county area," Leonela shares. "The work is rewarding, and I have a supportive and encouraging leader."

There's something truly special about showing up every day for the kids and families in the community you call home, and Leonela does that with so much heart.

Get to Know Leonela:
πŸ“ Hometown: Salinas, California - a city rich in culture, opportunities, and amazing people.
Fun Fact: Her father named her after the protagonist of a Venezuelan soap opera titled Leonela. How iconic is that?!
Favorite Things to Do: Nature walks, reading psychological thrillers, and shopping. When she's not doing that, you'll find her cheering on her son at his sporting events or soaking up time with family, which she absolutely loves.

Thank you, Leonela, for bringing your passion, your dedication, and your heart to our mission every single day. We are so lucky to have you!

When Leysa was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just eight years old, her world changed overnight. But thanks to the comprehensive care she receives at The Madison Clinic for Pediatric Diabetes at Salinas Valley Health , she's not just managing her condition; she's thriving.

What sets the clinic apart? A whole-patient approach that goes beyond medical treatment. Leysa's care team includes pediatric endocrinologists, registered dietitians, family nurse practitioners, child life specialists, and social workers, all working together to support her physical AND emotional well-being.

Even more powerful? Several team members, including Child Life Specialist Katie Craft and Family Nurse Practitioner Gina Ferrari, live with Type 1 diabetes themselves. As Katie says, "I see you, I hear you, I'm living this with you... we can do hard things together."

Leysa's mom, Flora, shares her gratitude: "They care about my daughter's well-being... emotionally as well, which is very important."

This is the kind of compassionate, expert care that transforms lives. Watch Leysa's story and see why your support of our Children's Miracle Network program matters so much. πŸ’™

Supporting small businesses like Spreckels Bakery means more than bringing home amazing baked goods. It means helping local kids and families right here in our community πŸ’™

This week is Spreckels Bakery’s final bake of May, and every order helps support our local Children's Miracle Network program. Their goal is to raise $1,000 to provide camp scholarships for 10 local kids living with diabetes so they can attend an educational diabetes camp this fall. Every treat sold helps them get closer to that goal.

From their incredible 50-hour organic sourdough to the lemon drop cookies everyone loves, every purchase gives back in a meaningful way. That’s what 'Small Business, Big Impact' is all about.

Orders open Wednesday, May 20 at 7:00 PM for next-day porch pickup at Spreckels Bakery πŸ‘‰ www.SpreckelsBakery.com

Thank you for supporting local businesses that care deeply about this community and the kids who call it home.

Meet Emily! 🩷

We're thrilled to introduce Emily, our Annual Giving Programs Coordinator and a passionate advocate for giving back to her hometown!

Emily is a first-generation Mexican-American on her dad's side and second-generation on her mom's side, with family roots in Chihuahua and Zacatecas, Mexico. She's been part of the Foundation family for about four years, starting as an intern for 10 months before stepping into her current role 3.5 years ago.

"My favorite thing about working here is feeling like I'm part of something bigger than myself," Emily shares. "We're able to provide essential services and support to the community, and for me, this is the same community that raised me. That makes it especially meaningful. I feel a real sense of responsibility and pride in being part of the effort to give back and help make this place even better for everyone."

What Emily loves most about her job is building relationships with donors and community members. "I love hearing people's stories and learning about their 'why.' It means a lot when someone is willing to share something so personal, and those moments help deepen our connection. At the end of the day, I truly enjoy talking with people and getting to know what matters most to them."

Get to Know Emily:
πŸ“ Hometown: Salinas, California
Fun Fact: She's a proud dog mom to FIVE adorable pups!

Happy World Baking Day! 🧁

For Leysa, baking is more than a hobby. It's one of her favorite ways to express creativity and share joy with others. When she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at eight years old, she didn't let it stop her from doing what she loves. Instead, she learned to adapt, experimenting with new recipes and creating treats that align with her health goals.

Leysa's story reminds us of an important truth: you can do anything with the right support, knowledge, and determination. Thanks to the comprehensive care she receives at The Madison Clinic for Pediatric Diabetes at Salinas Valley Health, Leysa has the tools and confidence to live fully, pursue her passions, and never let her diagnosis hold her back.

So today, we're celebrating Leysa and all the kids who refuse to be defined by their conditions. Keep baking, keep creating, keep thriving!

This May, we're recognizing Maternal Mental Health Month and the critical connection between mental wellness and meeting basic needs. πŸ’š For new parents, the stress of affording essentials like diapers can take a serious toll on mental health and family well-being.

Diapers are essential for families with young children, but they can be expensive and unaffordable for many. That's why our perinatal unit at Salinas Valley Health is hosting a diaper drive throughout May to support families in need. Donated diapers will be distributed by our Mobile Clinic to families in the community, helping ensure that babies remain comfortable, healthy, and dry.

When we remove barriers to basic needs, we support the mental health and dignity of parents and caregivers. Your donation makes a real difference.

Bring new diapers to one of these convenient drop-off locations May 1-31: πŸ“ Medical Center Main Entrance πŸ“ Labor & Delivery πŸ“ Cafeteria

If you'd like to support the diaper drive with a tax-deductible donation, please click the link in our bio, select our Healthy Kids Fund, and make a note of "diaper drive" in the comment section.

Let's come together to support maternal mental health and help families thrive. Every diaper counts! πŸ’™
