The Music Guerrilla

The Music Guerrilla The brainchild of Dr. Milt Allen, The Music Guerrilla uses music as a portal for personal, educational and emotional growth for all people.

Our society is at war with our artistic culture. In particular, music is fast becoming both an elitist pursuit as well as an artifact, increasingly manipulated for financial gain. The toll of this battle has scene an increase in music teacher dropout at as well as a larger, future generation being deprived of the study of music and, in effect, an examination of themselves. These non-traditional ti

mes call for non-traditional measures. That’s where The Music Guerrilla comes in. MG is a boots on the ground, in the trenches method of teaching, connecting with music-makers as well as academic classrooms directly. The Music Guerrilla is a 501c3 that uses music to provide traditional, cross-curricular and non-traditional educational opportunities spanning a variety of music genres. The brainchild of Dr. Milt Allen, The Music Guerrilla accomplishes its mission through

Traditional instrumental rehearsal clinics
Primary school instrumental presentations (with
Maestro Hilarioso!)
Cross-curricular lectures in other “core”
curriculum classes (e.g. English, History,
Math and Science)
1-day and extended residencies
Guest conducting appearances
Clinics and workshops at local, state, national
and international conferences. The Music Guerrilla Sessions, bringing
professional musicians into school
classrooms to both perform and discuss
their art in an intimate, interactive setting. This innovative, approach transcends cultural, societal, educational and musical boundaries and in so doing, allows each participant an opportunity to not only grow musically, but to grow as a whole person. Just as innovative is how The Music Guerrilla financially functions: it relies on donations and patronage. Many schools needing services don’t have the funds to bring in an outside perspective. The Music Guerrilla uses all funds from those that can contribute to assist those who can’t! The bottom line: Wage Music. The Music Guerrilla supports music education and artistry of all kinds. Whether it’s a dentist playing guitar in a weekend rock band, the 2nd chair alto sax player in the school band or a homeless bucket drummer, The Music Guerrilla encourages everyone to Wage Music – and in so doing, discover a part of themselves that makes the world a better place.

On the "adventure" side of things, some of you know I volunteer with the Red Cross. I was deployed to Oklahoma for the Winter Storms, hence no posting. KSAL, great news station here in the hometown, gave me a holler and our 10-minute interview turned into almost twice that long . . . but I can't get the dang thing loaded. So here's a picture. It was cold. So there. (On the music road all of February - stay tuned!)

Indiana!!!!! What an incredible time I had at InMEA this past weekend! I was afforded the opportunity to give the opening session keynote, a keynote for the CNAfME contingent the night before and 2 clinics. I am SO impressed by the infrastructures InMEA has, but also the opportunities and support of so many other organizations within the state. Indiana is a true model for "how to do it." And it couldn't come at a better time: in short, the state legislature is tearing programs apart. BUT, this is Indiana. And they are pulling together and fighting for MUSIC. Thanks InMEA - for EVERYTHING you do and for being such gracious hosts! Here's a few clinic pics! Thank you to GIA Publications, Inc. Music Education Division, Jupiter Band Instruments

Hey-ho! Back! In addition to adventurey stuff, I'm also a disaster responder for the Red Cross and just got back from a 3-week deployment in Washington state. I had a day off and decided to make the music rounds - and maybe a couple others - IYKYK. X-ers and Boomers can view this as a quiz, and BTW, spent some time in Aberdeen, WA whose town welcome is "Come As You Are" . . .

After a long day of sudden travel, I finally arrive at a room in Seattle, WA. For some reason, my room number seems appropriate here & makes me giggle… As to why I’m here, well, that’ll have to wait a bit. Life moves fast!

The things you see when you travel, like this llama just off The Sacred Path in Peru. For some reason, just cracks me up. I certainly have my thoughts as to what the critter is declaring, but how about you provide your caption below! C'mon, have some fun!

Few years back, I was working with the resilient students at Centennial High School in Compton, CA (Kendrick Lamar's alma mater). One of the students I met had this tattoo. I found it both inspiring and heartbreaking. The stories these kids could tell . . . and the difference music has made (Thanks, Maestro Manny!). Hope to get back there one of these days!

And introducing: "Fake Music History"! To make you all smiles, FMH will bring you the occasional fictional, therefore useless music fact OR actual occurrences where the musical truth was bent! Because you need a giggle. And here we go:

Beethoven's use of the descending minor 3rd at the beginning of his 5th Symphony was said to have been inspired by the "going down" tones of the many elevators he joy-rode during his childhood in Bonn, Germany. He was also known for pushing all the buttons as he exited, beginning a tradition which can still be observed today. (Note: his joy-riding also inspired the famous chorus at the end of his last symphony: "Ode to Joy".)
