Scout Troop 214 has been hard at work in the sanctuary! They replaced broken plexiglass inside the photo blind and replaced bridge boards on the bridge to the west of the photo blind. But that was not enough, they took off and constructed an entirely new kiosk in the east lot.
Hard at work, were Heath, Trena, Hadin & Tarin Carlson & Ben & Wyatt Schrant
Robert & Landon Hutchcraft & Robert & Liam Evans along with Micah Parker &
Bill Shipley all from troop 214.
This is a great example of the industrial attitude exhibited by motivated young men in the Salina area. We thank them for their hard work in helping make our sanctuary and even nicer place for the public to enjoy.

350 10 inch catfish were added to the sanctuary pond recently. Kalina Cole from the Pratt Fish Hatchery drove them up to Salina to add to the fish population in the pond, Fishing is allowed until October 31st and then must be stopped until March 1. The fish provide much needed nurishment for Migrating birds stopping at the pond. Small fish are an absolutely critical energy source for migrating birds, serving as the primary fuel that allows many shorebirds, seabirds, and waterfowl to survive their long-distance journeys.
This in addition to the bass and catfish previously added to the pond on several occasions.

35 people came to Kansas Wesleyan last Thursday to hear Bob Gress talking about his new book, the Guide to Kansas, Birds and Birding Hotspots. We were excited to see five children in the audience, and they really seem to get a kick out of Bob’s observations. As usual, we ended the program with our door prize giveaway, and many people traveled home with a new prized possession! Bob told us he’s traveling to Madagascar in a couple weeks and multiple people were trying to figure out how to hide in his Samsonite luggage!
Next month we will have Jackie Augustine sharing her knowledge about cranes in Kansas.
