For the past 30 years refugees who were forced to flee their homelands, and were chosen for resettlement in the state of Oregon, were initially resettled in the Portland metr

o area. Due to the rising costs of housing in Portland, agencies began to expand resettlement to the city of Salem at the end of 2015. There was an overwhelming response of support and volunteer efforts throughout the city. In October 2016, Salem Leadership Foundation hosted a series of lunch meetings called “Welcoming Our New Neighbors.” The purpose of these meetings was to bring together the various groups and organizations that were seeking to care for refugees and explore how the efforts could be coordinated. At the end of these meetings, Salem For Refugees was formed in order to continue the collaboration in caring for our new neighbors! Salem For Refugees is a growing network of community members, businesses, government organizations, non-profits, resettlement agencies, and faith communities who are committed to empowering refugees to thrive in Salem.

As we wrap up this season of SFR Connects, we want to thank everyone who joined us throughout the year — community partners, volunteers, churches, supporters, and friends.

Over the past months, we gathered to learn, share stories, discuss important topics, celebrate cultures, and strengthen our community together. Each gathering reminded us of the power of connection and belonging.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. SFR Connects will return in September, and we look forward to another season of meaningful conversations and community together!

This week we celebrated the graduation of our PEEP participants as they completed another step toward employment, confidence, and thriving in our community.

Through hard work and encouragement from one another, these students showed incredible dedication and resilience. We are so proud of each graduate and excited for what comes next!

A special thank you to all the volunteers, teachers, and community members who helped make this program possible. Your time, encouragement, and support continue to open doors and create opportunities to thrive.

In honor of World Refugee Day, we would like to invite you to join us for an evening of dialogue, stories, and updates as we reflect together on the refugee journey.

Reflections on the Refugee Journey is an interactive community event where participants will walk through four stages of the refugee experience: displacement, waiting, resettlement, and thriving. Through table conversations, activities, personal stories, and updates from Salem for Refugees, we hope to create space for deeper understanding, empathy, and connection.

📅 Friday, June 19th
🕕 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
📍 Broadway Commons

This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the refugee journey and the work happening in our community.

We would love for you to join us and invite others who may be interested as well.

Together, we can continue building a community where everyone belongs and everyone can thrive.

Over the last 9 months Laurel Rightmer, Director of Operations and Development, and Sarah Sims, Corvallis Programs Manager, joined a Development Cohort of non-profit leaders and fundraisers hosted by Salem Leadership Foundation. Learning topics included annual planning, large scale events, building relationships with donors, grant writing, and so much more. We’re grateful for a community that sees non-profit fundraising as a collaborative opportunity, instead of competition. Thanks Kyle Dickinson for your creativity and leadership!

With the generosity of our community and the help of students from Portland University, we hosted a celebratory tea time for mothers at Blossom Gardens.

Together, we were able to put together 47 gift bags and create a special space to celebrate, encourage, and honor the mothers in our community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this beautiful gathering possible!
