For the past 30 years refugees who were forced to flee their homelands, and were chosen for resettlement in the state of Oregon, were initially resettled in the Portland metr

o area. Due to the rising costs of housing in Portland, agencies began to expand resettlement to the city of Salem at the end of 2015. There was an overwhelming response of support and volunteer efforts throughout the city. In October 2016, Salem Leadership Foundation hosted a series of lunch meetings called “Welcoming Our New Neighbors.” The purpose of these meetings was to bring together the various groups and organizations that were seeking to care for refugees and explore how the efforts could be coordinated. At the end of these meetings, Salem For Refugees was formed in order to continue the collaboration in caring for our new neighbors! Salem For Refugees is a growing network of community members, businesses, government organizations, non-profits, resettlement agencies, and faith communities who are committed to empowering refugees to thrive in Salem.

Throughout the summer, children and youth at Blossom Gardens came together each week for afternoons filled with sports, games, and outdoor fun. From soccer and basketball to group games and friendly competitions, these activities encouraged teamwork, healthy living, and new friendships while giving young people a safe place to stay active during the summer months.

This summer, children at Grand Fir Apartments gathered each week for our Summer Learning Club, where learning and fun went hand in hand. Through interactive activities, games, reading, arts and crafts, and hands-on projects, students had the opportunity to continue learning while building friendships and confidence during their summer break.

More than 200 people from across our community came together this month to celebrate the World Cup Final at a watch party hosted by . Families enjoyed an afternoon of exciting soccer, delicious food, and special activities for children, creating a welcoming space where neighbors from many backgrounds could connect and celebrate together. Events like these remind us that community is built through shared experiences, and we are deeply grateful to Morning Star Community Church and all of the volunteers and community partners who made this event possible.

You're invited to THRIVE, a fundraiser in support of refugees, our new neighbors! THRIVE will be held at the Willamette Heritage Center with seatings on Thursday, November 12th at 4:30 PM, and Friday, November 13th at 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

Every year THRIVE features inspiring stories of new neighbors, delicious appetizers and desserts, and an opportunity to financially support our vision of seeing refugees THRIVE in our city. Join us in making Salem a welcoming place!

What an amazing week at All Nations Soccer Camp! ⚽❤️
Soccer Camp is one of our favorite activities at Salem for Refugees. It's so much more than a game—it's a place where friendships are formed, confidence grows, and children from all backgrounds come together to learn, laugh, and play.
A huge thank you to our incredible drivers, volunteers, coaches, and community partners who gave their time, energy, and hearts to make this week unforgettable. We couldn't do it without you!
