The Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is a legal entity of the State of Ohio and is administered by a five-member, elected Board of Supervisors. These Board members make important decisions regarding conservation within the county and set the direction for the District Staff. The District works cooperatively with other county agencies, local officials, and conservation groups. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service works with the District by offering assistance to producers within the county. Each of the 88 Ohio counties has its own SWCD, and funding is obtained through the County Commissioners, the State of Ohio, grants, and donations. The individual Soil and Water Conservation Districts within the state serve the varying needs of the county in which they are located. The Columbiana SWCD serves the residents of Columbiana County by providing many quality services. The District works with the local community to increase the awareness and appreciation of the county’s valuable natural resources.

Staying on topic with yesterday's post we ask the question; what is nitrate (NO3-) and where does it come from?

Nitrogen (N2) is a naturally occurring compound that is used in agriculture to help increase crop yields. It comes in the form of fertilizer, manure, and sewage. As Nitrogen interacts with nitrifying bacteria it becomes nitrate (NO3-), which is water soluble.

It's not just agricultural fields that contribute to the presence of nitrate in waterways and drinking water. In fact, an article by Chung et. al. found that the magnitude of urban N yields is comparable to agricultural watersheds. Plus, their analysis also points to it being nonpoint sources (meaning there's no one culprit)

A flowering grass sounds like something that's made up, but we can assure you that it's real. Side Oats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) is a native flowering grass that will be offered for our Fall Native Plant Sale. The small bright purple flowers pictured here can also sometimes appear purple in the late summer. Not only is it extremely drought tolerant, but it also serves as the host plant for Skipper butterflies and moths.

As part of the spring Tree and Fish Sale Columbiana SWCD will also be selling nesting boxes from J.S. Houses!

Owl boxes can be purchased for $100 per box. These boxes provide necessary nesting habitat on a property for several different Owl species. By attracting these owls you can help decrease the number of rodents on your property and also give you the opportunity to see Owl species more commonly on your land.

Eastern Bluebird boxes can be purchased for $25 per box. These boxes are extremely well made and if property taken care of can last many years helping grow the Bluebird populations in your area.

If you have bats J.S. Houses also has bat boxes for sale which can be purchased for $65 per box. These boxes can help encourage bats to stay around your area and can also benefit you by decreasing the amount of mosquitos and other flying insects in these areas.

All listed boxes can be picked up at the Columbiana SWCD office. All sale proceeds from these boxes go to Jayden Stoffer as she continues to build her small wood working business.
