Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America - OPVA

Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America - OPVA Since 1976, Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America works to maximize the quality of life for its members and all people with Spinal cord injury and disease.

In the last two decades we have raised over $5,000,000 for research that is focused on alleviating the effects of and finding a cure for spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) as well as educating individuals, communities and local government agencies on (SCI/D) knowledge and help improve the lives of those with SCI/D.

-Advocacy & Legislation Program

Oregon PVA will promote equal access in all a

reas of life for disabled citizens by removal of architectural and attitudinal barriers through: education, technical assistance and networking with other organizations. Oregon PVA acts on all legislation at all levels of government through: initiation, formulation and the definition of legislation that is in the best interest of veterans and physically disabled citizens.

-Hospital Liaison Program

One of the main goals of the Hospital Liaison Program is to maintain a working relationship with VA hospitals in Oregon and Washington, private hospitals and rehabilitation centers. In doing so, Oregon PVA helps facilitate the re-entry of spinal cord and/or neurologically impaired persons and their families into society through personal contacts, technical assistance and education. In 1994, Oregon PVA established the Health Care Policy Review Program to monitor the needs of the mobility impaired veteran and provide information on health care reform.

-Sports Program

Oregon PVA promotes and provides sporting and recreational events, activities, education and funding for persons with mobility impairments. The sports program promotes all sporting activities including:

* Deep Sea Fishing
* Kid’s Free Fish Day
* Quad Rugby
* Recreational Events
* Trapshooting
* National Veterans Wheelchair Games
* Sporting Events

-Membership Program

Oregon PVA will establish and maintain a membership program for disabled citizens of Oregon with an emphasis on spinal cord injured or neurologically impaired veterans. This program will also promote the name Oregon PVA by locating new members and volunteers through: networking with other disability groups, media, and membership drives. Through the membership program we offer two social events annually in the Portland area. The first membership event is held in August at Oaks Park. In September, the members are invited to our Annual Banquet to celebrate our year in review.
