On May 5, 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week. In part, President Reagan acknowledged the difficult and dangerous assignment of ensuring the custody, safety and well-being of inmates in our Nation’s prisons and jails and that our positions are essential to the day-to-day operations and would be impossible to achieve the foremost goal of security and control. President Reagan publicly praised correctional professionals for their dedication, courage and honor to a profession that does not receive the recognition it deserves. I wish to echo these sentiments from 36 years ago as we take the opportunity this week to acknowledge and thank all correctional professionals that work the toughest beat in this country.

AOCE has been informed DOC will soon be implementing a policy of temperature checks prior to employees entering their work location/institution. We have not seen the policy yet but wanted you to be informed as soon as we were. All we know at this time is a manager will be tasked with reading the temperature and if it reads 100.4 degrees or more you will be sent home. As a reminder, AOCE has an LOA with DOC that reads in part:

Medically Mandated Employees. Employees who are medically mandated to remain at home because they have been exposed to the coronavirus shall be encouraged to telework if allowed by their medical professional, if their job is suitable for telework, if telework resources are available, and if the network can accommodate it. If one or more of the above factors does not allow for telework, the employee shall be placed on paid administrative leave until the employee is medically released to work. Employees may be asked for proof of medical mandate including the time period for which they are mandated to remain at home, however they will not need to be separately released to return to work.

It is AOCE’s position if you are sent home from work by DOC due to a fever of 100.4 or more you should be placed on paid administrative leave consistent with the language above. We have requested clarification on this from DOC and DAS.
