This morning’s blog post discusses ONC’s summer 2025 expedition, which spanned a wide range of fascinating ocean science, including research on the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ). They replaced a seafloor “Fetch” transponder—one of 21 permanent acoustic markers used to track how tectonic plates move beneath the ocean (including monitoring for slow slip movement offshore). Chances for thunderstorms on Saturday continues to increase (20-60%) across northwest Oregon and southwest Washington. The NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the risk of severe weather along and east of the I-5 corridor to the Cascades.

Potential impacts include debris flows over the 2024 burn areas, localized urban flooding for low-lying and poorly drained areas, frequent lightning, damaging hail, and gusty winds from the strongest storms knocking down trees and/or power lines.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers' 2024 Report Card for Oregon's Infrastructure, "Seismic (earthquake) risk in Oregon due to the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake event is extremely different from the previous understanding of seismic risks in Oregon. Dams that are designed for a peak ground acceleration of 0.05g, equivalent to light shaking expected to rock parked cars, now must withstand 0.6g to 1.2g, equivalent to violent shaking expected to shift buildings off their foundations. Most dams in Oregon were constructed prior to modern seismic provisions, and several need seismic retrofits. Damage and dam failures are expected at many dams along the Oregon coast during the Cascadia Subduction Zone event."

This week, all volcanoes in the Cascade Range of Washington and Oregon are at normal background levels of activity.

Past Week Observations: Mount St. Helens continues to experience slightly heightened seismicity than typical of recent years, with 15 located earthquakes in the last week, and 498 since Feb 1 when the current increase in seismicity began. The largest earthquake over the past week was a magnitude 0.6, with the largest since Feb 1 a magnitude 2.0. The average depth of earthquakes at Mount St. Helens last week was 2.7 miles below the crater, compared to an average depth of 3.9 since Feb 1.

Although this level of seismicity is elevated compared to the last several years at Mount St. Helens, it is still considered within the background range and does not suggest an imminent eruption. No changes have been detected in ground deformation, volcanic gas, or thermal emissions at the volcano.

Small earthquakes were also detected this week at Mount Baker and Mount Rainier. All monitoring data are consistent with background activity levels in the Cascades Range.

Field crews performed station maintenance this week at Mount Rainier, Three Sisters, and Newberry.
