Meet Kara, our new Community Outreach Chaplain!

We’re excited to welcome Kara Brown to the YMCA team in a new part-time role as our Community Outreach Chaplain.

Kara has called Salem home for the past 18 years and brings a background in vocational ministry and nonprofit work. In this role, she’ll be here to connect with our members, staff and families, offer support, and simply be someone you can talk to when you need it.

And because we want you to get to know Kara beyond her new title, here are a few things you should know:

💛 Her favorite color is yellow.
🏈 She loves college football. Go Miami Hurricanes!
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 She and her husband, Jeff, have been married for 23 years and have four kids, including twins in high school and two they recently launched into college.
😊 She loves spending time with her family and getting to know people in her community.

You can find Kara’s office right behind the café. If you see her around the Y, be sure to say hello, or stop by her office and introduce yourself!

We were thrilled to receive a $10,000 grant from Salem Health to help support swim lesson scholarships at our Salem and Silverton locations.

This funding will ensure more families have access to critical water safety instruction and education. Each year, the Family YMCA of Marion and Polk Counties provides 2,000+ swim lessons to youth and adults across our community.

🇺🇸 Veterans Stand Down | September 2 at the Salem Family YMCA

On Wednesday, September 2, we are honored to open our doors for the 2026 Mid-Willamette Valley Veterans Stand Down, hosted by Serving Our Veterans At Home (SOVAH) and community partners.

The Stand Down brings more than 50 service providers together in one place to connect veterans and current service members with resources and benefits they have earned through their service. Veterans can access medical and dental care, legal services, housing assistance, financial guidance, employment resources, military surplus gear, lunch and more.

Last year, more than 300 veterans were served through this event. We are grateful that the YMCA can once again provide a space where veterans can connect with organizations ready to serve them.

Ready for a season of skill-building, teamwork, and FUN? Our YMCA Soccer program gives kids the chance to learn the game, grow their confidence, and build friendships, all while having a great time on the field!
