youth wrestling confuses winning with development

the biggest lie in youth wrestling is that winning early means you’re doing it right.

it doesn’t.

winning at 8, 10, even 12 years old often has nothing to do with long-term skill.
it usually means one of three things.
early puberty.
over-coaching.
or a rules exploit.

kids are cutting weight too early.
running the same move on smaller opponents.
being praised for results instead of habits.

then puberty hits.
the playing field levels.
and suddenly the “stud” quits because the wins stop.

wrestling is not supposed to peak at 10.
it’s supposed to build skill, confidence, and resilience for 10 years.

if your program celebrates medals more than mastery,
you are building burnout, not champions.
