Preserve Salem exists to maintain Salem's environmental, civic and economic quality of life without the burden of assuming externalized costs imposed by Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) construction and operation whose impact on the Roanoke River is stated by MVP to be "high" from MVP's own environmental assessment. Salem's water depends on the Roanoke River and wells mostly derived from the Roanoke River. Because Salem holds an MS4 permit to discharge stormwater back into the river, Salem bears the financial burden of first cleaning that water of sedimentation which will reach high levels during MVP construction and a "new higher level" post construction likely to cost roughly $350.00 per year per person just to clean MVP construction. Our little Roanoke River is expected to absorb 1000 tons of MVP sediment per year which carries bacteria and other carcinogens and toxic contaminants. The Roanoke Greenway is a pride but the River’s floodplain may not be safe for recreation after MVP.
