Oregon AFSCME

Oregon AFSCME Oregon AFSCME represents nearly 40,000 workers - working together for a better state and to ensure the voices of workers are heard.

Most AFSCME members are, as the organization's name implies, public governmental employees. However, Oregon AFSCME does represent some workers in the private sector; many of those work for private, non-profit organizations doing contract work for a governmental agency.

When union families are impacted by tragedy, we show up for each other. Please consider supporting workers and families affected by the Nippon Dynawave implosion in Longview and help spread the word.

While our community grapples with the recent Nippon Dynawave implosion, organized Labor is stepping up to help workers and families impacted by the tragedy.

Results are in, and we are proud to celebrate victories for our endorsed candidates Dr. Tammy Carpenter for State House and Nafisa Fai for Washington County Chair!

These wins are because union members stepped up, got involved, and fought for leaders who will stand with working people.

Thank you to every member who volunteered, voted, and helped build the power of our union this election season!

Congratulations to Vanessa Nordyke, Peter Klym and Councilor Juan Carlos González / teamjcg!

These victories show what’s possible when working people stand together and make our voices heard.

By volunteering, talking to coworkers, and casting their ballots, Oregon AFSCME members helped elect leaders who will stand up for workers, public services, and our communities.

Now, we’re ready to keep the momentum going through November.

We’re proud to celebrate Sophia Thai, winner of the AFSCME Family Scholarship, and her mother, Hoa Theresa Vu, a member of AFSCME Local 88.

Sophia highlights the values that are at the heart of our union: equity, respect for public service, and the belief that meaningful change happens when people come together to serve others.

This week, I am sharing a photo of AFSCME Family Scholarship winner Sophia Thai and her mother Hoa Theresa Vu, a member of AFSCME Local 88/Council 75 in Oregon. A few years back, Sophia worked with other local high school students to raise funds and spread awareness of blood cancer. Along the way, she recognized the language and cultural barriers experienced by some patients, and she came away with respect for the “dedication of healthcare workers” who “tirelessly supported nervous patients and comforted anxious families...” In her essay, Sophia connects the dots between her volunteer work and AFSCME’s values: “equity within systems, respect for public service, and opportunity for young leaders. Meaningful change isn’t doing a task alone; it is people’s continuous, collective commitment to service. As a Vietnamese-American living within immigrant families and communities, these are the values our foundations are built on.” Thanks to Sophia and her mother for lifting up the values that animate our union and labor movement. Today, on National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day, we’re honoring the counselors, case managers, peer support specialists, and behavioral health professionals who help our communities heal.

We know how important the care you provide is. That’s why Oregon AFSCME is proud to be a founding partner of United We Heal, which creates paid apprenticeship and career advancement opportunities for behavioral health workers across Oregon.

To every mental health provider: thank you for the compassion, dedication, and care you bring to this work every day.
