Founded in Salem, OR in 1997. Purple Hands Pledge® has reached all 50 states & 28 countries across the globe. The Hands & Words Are Not For Hurting Project® emphasizes positive behavior modification to encourage us all to work together to break the cycles of child abuse, domestic and family violence, bullying in

schools, and su***de. This project is designed to work in partnership with all abuse, violence, su***de, and bully prevention, conflict resolution, and character-building skills programs.

The Salem City Council honored Hands & Words are Not for Hurting Week, the week of October 19-25, with a proclamation at its October 13 meeting. Accepting the proclamation on behalf of Ann S. Kelly, founder and executive director of the Hands & Words Are Not For Hurting Project, was Nicole Utz, director of Salem Housing Authority-SHA.

The proclamation supports teaching non-violent resolution of conflict to our children and the practice of it within our families.

"We recognize that respect for ourselves and others is key to developing healthy relationships at every age and in all circumstances..." the proclamation reads.

Salem City Councilor Trevor Phillips gives a proclamation honoring Hands and Words are Not for Hurting Week, October 20-26, which envisions a community without abuse, violence and su***de to Nicole Utz of the Salem Housing Authority, who accepted it on behalf of the Ann S. Kelly Hands and Words are Not for Hurting Project. The Housing Authority will see several of its housing developments illuminated in purple in honor of this observance, which encourages the teaching of nonviolent principles of conflict resolution.
