MSPC manages the Bush Park Adopt-a-Rosebed program. Many of our adopters have asked how to deal with black spot. Joe McNally, the park's Natural Infrastructure Specialist, talks us through it in this video. If too many leaves are infected, you should treat with a spray rather than pull leaves off. The spray can be 1 teaspoon baking soda, a few drops of dishwashing liquid in one quart of water. The entire leaf needs to be sprayed. Any fallen leaves (even the old dried ones) should be picked up because they still carry active fungal spores that will stay in the soil to infect plants later. We've seen some evidence of powdery mildew. The same procedure applies. All leaves can be put in city composting. Your home compost may not get hot enough to kill the fungus. And while you are picking up leaves, pull mulch away from the stems. It tends to migrate right up to the plant but should be at least 3" away from the base of the plant (aka the crown)

Apple Pressing at Bush Park - what a fun event. Hope it turns into an annual thing. Many thanks to all the volunteers who turned up to chop, grind, press, schmooze, drink, and more. We had perhaps 500 pounds of a variety of apples (some from the Bush Park orchard), plus crabapples and grapes so each batch was a bit different. Two different grinding machines, and two different presses. I will say electricity was our friend helping us process all those apples!
The parkgoers who came upon us thoroughly enjoyed it, many staying to help. It's a fascinating process and the end result so tasty!

Open 10-5 Friday and Saturday, 10-3 Sunday! Come shop with us! Your yard will be happier and our proceeds go to our projects here at Bush's Pasture Park!

MSPC volunteers don't just work in the gardens at Bush Park. Sometimes we support activities at the Salem Art Association.
Our Board President, Julia Battle, often assists with the summer Art Camp and earlier this month the campers created fairy houses out of materials collected by Tuesday Gardeners and the campers. The kids made clever use out of their found supplies and made several charming houses. These fairy houses can be found south of the ravine behind the bench.

Bush Park is alive with color! Come for a stroll through the rose garden. Stop and smell the roses! Head toward the Bush House backyard to see the veggies that are now being harvested for the Marion Polk Food Share. Take a peek at the tall perennials just south of the Conservatory. Relax and enjoy the serenity of the Woodland Garden. The basalt furniture is surprisingly comfortable.
