As a Catholic troop, we were compelled to disaffiliate when Trail Life USA added a "sola fide" requirement effectively expelling all Catholic, Orthodox, and other apostolic churches (in our opinion)

Trail Life has add a "Sola Fide" clause to its statement of faith, effectively expelling Catholic, Orthodox, and other apostolic churches and leaders from its ranks.

Our troop - which is a part of St. Joseph Trail Life - is in the process of closing and moving to an organization that is not hostile to our faith.

Many rank and file protestant Trailmen were very kind. It was a blessing to pray, camp, hike, cook, sing, swim, shoot, and grow beside them. Although we'll be wearing different uniforms - we look forward to seeing them on the trail.

In late June, Troop OR-1531 gathered for a memorable campout at the Brigittine Monastery in Amity, Oregon. Despite a steady drizzle throughout the weekend, spirits were high and the boys made the most of their time together with games, fellowship, prayer, and service. Most of the Trailmen arrived on Friday night, setting up camp in the fields near the monastery....

A New Year Begins with Trail Life!

We are so excited to kick off another great year of Trail Life USA at St. Joseph’s! Our first troop meeting will be on Tuesday, September 9th at 6:30 PM, upstairs above the gym at St. Joseph’s in Salem, Oregon. Boys, don’t forget to come in your full Trail Life uniform as we start the year strong together.

Our Woodlands Trail boys (K–5th grade) will dive into fun, hands-on activities this year. We’ll be learning about fitness and nutrition—how to fuel our bodies well and stay active—as well as classic outdoor skills like ropes and knots and even map-and-compass orienteering. These lessons are designed to be adventurous and practical, giving every boy a chance to gain confidence outdoors. We are also looking forward to an upcoming troop hike at Silver Falls State Park, where the Woodlands boys can put their new skills into action surrounded by Oregon’s most beautiful waterfalls.

Meanwhile, our Navigators and Adventurers (middle and high schoolers) will be working side by side on their Trail Badges. Each month we’ll focus on a new badge area, meeting on the first three Tuesdays of the month. Through the year, we’ll explore everything from Outdoor Skills and Emergency Preparedness to Citizenship, Fitness, and Serving Others. Both age groups will move forward together, building leadership skills, serving the community, and preparing for exciting projects around Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

Trail Life isn’t just about badges—it’s about growing in faith, building friendships, and learning what it means to “Walk Worthy.” This year promises to be one of our best yet, and we encourage every Trailman to bring a friend, new ideas, and plenty of enthusiasm as we set off on another great year of adventure!

A Catholic Trailman Leads a Life of....

The ultimate goal of the Christian life is to become a saint. One day, St. Thomas Aquinas’ sister asked him a very simple but important question, “How do you become a saint?” He paused and famously replied, “Will it!” In Trail Life USA, Catholic Trailmen embark upon this journey of becoming ordinary saints by leading a life of …

PRAYER

Right praise and worship of God are central to the Christian life, and prayer is the wellspring of our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. According to St. John of Damascus, “prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God” (CCC 2559). In Trail Life USA, Catholic Trailmen experience a rich prayer life, including personal prayer, traditional communal prayer such as the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet, and adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.
