Babies and toddlers grow and develop at different rates.

Early intervention can improve the outcomes for children who need a little extra help to keep their development on track. Early intervention services are authorized by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and are available in every state. As part of the Utah Department of Health Baby Watch Early Intervention program, our goal is to help your child grow and learn, and reach their

potential. The Kids Who Count early intervention program serves children from birth to age three in the Nebo School District boundaries who have a delay in their development or a diagnosed disability. One of the best speech therapy tools you have this summer doesn't cost a thing — it's at the park.

Toddlers learn best when they're moving, exploring, and genuinely excited about what's around them. That makes a trip to the park the perfect place to sneak in some real listening and direction-following practice — the kind that builds the foundation for following instructions in preschool, staying safe in public, and understanding language in longer, more complex chunks.

The secret is to start simple. One step at a time. "Find a red leaf." That's it. Once your little one gets the hang of it, you layer in a second step: "Find a red leaf and put it in your pocket."

You're not drilling — you're playing.

And in between, try a "freeze" moment: everybody stops, gets quiet, and counts the sounds they can hear. Birds, wind, a dog barking two streets over. You'd be surprised how much a toddler will tune in when you make listening feel like a game.

🚲 Happy World Bike Day!🚲

Today we're celebrating something we love to see in early intervention — toddlers on balance bikes. These little two-wheelers aren't just fun; they're quietly doing big developmental work every time your child scoots down the sidewalk.

Why we love them developmentally:

Balance bikes (the kind with no pedals) teach children to balance on two wheels naturally by pushing with their feet and gliding. This builds core strength, whole-body coordination, and bilateral motor skills — all foundational goals in early childhood development. Because little ones control their own speed with their feet, they feel safe and in control, which builds confidence and encourages them to keep trying at their own pace.

Steering, turning, and navigating their environment also develops spatial awareness and body awareness from a very young age — and all of that gross motor work strengthens the leg muscles needed for walking, running, and jumping too.

💡 EI tip from our team: Balance bikes can be a wonderful tool for children working on motor delays. Kids as young as 18 months can start — the key is proper fit. Their feet should rest flat on the ground when seated. No pedals, no training wheels, no rush. Just movement and joy at their own pace.

🌟 Bonus milestone: Children who learn on balance bikes often skip training wheels entirely and transition to pedal bikes by age 3–4! They've already mastered the hardest part — balance — so pedaling comes naturally when the time is right.

Have questions about supporting your child's motor development? Our early intervention team is here to help. Every child's journey looks different, and we're with you every step — and scoot — of the way. 💙

This year’s golf tournament was a huge success!

Thank you to all of our sponsors, golfers, volunteers, and team members who helped make the day possible. Events like this are a great reminder of what can happen when people come together to support a cause bigger than themselves.

We’re grateful for the support, the turnout, and the impact made through this event.

Already looking forward to the next one!
