Heads up! This Saturday, March 28th you might want to avoid Silver Falls. The park is hosting a 20-mile hiking event called Mammoth March, where 1100 hikers will flood the trails all over the park. Trails involved include parts of the canyon, north Perimeter, Rackett Ridge, Buck Mountain, Catamount, 214 trail and others. Route details can be found on All Trails searching for Mammoth March Oregon.

If you are familiar with the Newt Loop drop box features, there was a ride-around tree at the top of the drops. The storm knocked down the tree and left a giant crater and up-ended root ball. Today we cut it and the stump stood up and filled the crater. The ride-around is back, this time with a podium in the middle!

Many thanks to this clean-up crew! Now that the logs are removed from Silver Falls backcountry trails, they are much more pleasant to use with large limbs and debris thrown off.
And here is an important notice to trail users: Private property logging will be taking place using the lower few miles of Lookout Mountain road out of 214 TH for the next few months. Please try to use trails instead of the road if at all possible, for everyone's safety.

Here's one way to fill a rootball crater in the trail.

Good news for Silver Falls! By the end of the day Sunday SATA saw teams will have cleared all of the backcountry trails with the exception of Perimeter south of Rackett Ridge. Parks staff have repaired the washout at Howard Creek and are working as fast as they can to get the next section of canyon trails re-opened. You might still find branches and debris and an isolated log here and there but the trails are open and ready.

UPDATE on Silver Falls State Park: Most canyon trails except South Falls and Maple Ridge remain closed due to massive and unstable landslides. Don't even think about going past the barriers. The good news is that the backcountry trails are OPEN, just expect debris and branches even on the trails that have been cut out. Parking is available at Smith Creek Village (cafe and warm fireplace are open!), Howard Creek day use and 214 TH.
SATA sawyers and trail scouts have been very busy! The following trails have been cleared of downed trees as of yesterday (see map):
--Catamount including the backside
--Newt Loop and skills stations
--Rabbit Hole
--Lower Smith Creek and upper 214 trail
--House Mountain Road
These trails still have a few trees down as well as debris:
--Smith Creek
--Rackett Ridge and RR Connector
--RMT
--Howard Creek Loop (note hard closure near the Horse Camp due to washout)
No information on these trails:
--North section of Buck Mtn Loop
--Lower 214
--The Nature Trail is likely mostly under water
Multiple messy trees and debris remain on all of Perimeter. If you venture out there, plan for considerable extra time.
The Youth Camp paved road is completely impassable due to huge trees and root balls.
Be safe out there, and enjoy the trails! PM here with any new findings; trees fall down every day.

Y'all are awesome! Many, many thanks to the hardy volunteers who spent their Black Friday getting muddy and wet in the service of getting Silver Falls trails ready for winter. Our partners at REI not only sent swag gifts for all the workers, but they also came out in force to add their muscle. Our long-time friends at LifeSource Natural Foods kept the after-party supplied with tasty and healthy snacks.
