The Freedom Project

The Freedom Project The Freedom Project exists for the purpose of partnering with organizations that are making a difference in human trafficking. Now we reevaluate.

When we began The Freedom Project, we listened, we learned and we decided we would do all we could to join in the efforts to put a stop to the trafficking of human beings. At the time people were so eager to hear us share all we knew from the research we were gathering from friends near and far. We accepted many invitations to speak in local coffee shops, listen in on UN gatherings, share with un

iversity students in Latvia of deceptive, false job opportunities that would lead them to underground brothels, held conversations with gas attendants who had no idea that humans were being bought and sold right around them, and so much more. Opportunities of every kind flooded us. From being involved with Oregon’s Human Trafficking Task Force, to having a rally pushing for a law to make trafficking illegal here in Oregon, and everything in between! We raised awareness, sold t-shirts and sent funds to projects we helped create such as Hope Homes in Russia. Hope Homes are apartments that help transition the orphan girls from orphanage life to everyday society. 80% of the orphan girls in Russia are sold straight from the orphanage into the sex industry. The last three years have been a wild ride to say the least. Today I look at the latest statistics and the numbers have all increased. What was a 39 billion dollar industry today is a 45 billion dollar industry. 2.5 million men, women, children, and babies are being deceived, tricked or forced into slavery within 127 countries. I believe that some amount of the increase seen in these stats are due to more awareness and the truth coming to the surface, bringing to light the reality of how huge this problem really is. What have we done to help, what has worked, what more can we do? We have seen great accomplishments in the last three years, but need to see more in the years to come. My personal conflict is seeing so many people, websites, organizations trying to raise funds to do something. I am encouraged to see so many people come on board to be abolitionist against trafficking. I understand money is always needed, but what is it being used for? Is it really freeing people, really preventing and saving people? Is it being used to restore and heal the wounded and sick? So little is talked about regarding what the funds are used for to stop trafficking. Therefor I have decided to spend some good amount of time looking, searching and finding people/organizations who are rescuing, preventing and healing trafficked victims. I want to find those who think they are doing little because they have little and give them what they need to do lots! I know they are out there. I want to continue to use my talents to create and sell my products in order to send funds or teach women to create, and provide for themselves. I want to take on an opportunity to work alongside the fashion industry which could provide safe, healthy work for many people who would otherwise be forced into the sex industry. I want to do the little that I can do, because in the end if everyone does a little is can equal a whole lot! I hope when my two year old son reaches ten years of age, human trafficking will be abolished for good. The term would be long forgotten and this world will be a better place. If everyone does a little, a lot will happen!

“Total control over another person is the power dynamic at the heart of po*******hy. The erotic appeal of this fantasy to millions of terrifyingly normal
men fosters an immense industry in which women and children are abused, not in fantasy but in reality.” - Emily Dworkin (Trauma and Recovery)

Human trafficking is still a very serious subject that’s hasn’t been unearthed by many. So many victims are bound in slavery, yet many more don’t want to be inconvenienced by the mess or “darkness” of this subject. If we want to make a difference in this world, we will have to be inconvenienced. We will have to be the hands and feet of Jesus. So what are you doing today to shed light in a dark world. There are so many causes out there that needs your participation to make a difference. No one is to big it small to add value to someone’s life. If all that God needs is your “yes”, would you hive that to Him?

Trucker Kevin Kimmel spotted an old RV at a truck stop last year that caught his attention. He says that he noticed “a young girl peek out and be abruptly pulled back from the window, and the shade pulled back over it.” Kimmel called the police because he recognized the warning signs of forced prostitution thanks to training from an organization called Truckers Against Trafficking or TAT; that call ended weeks of physical and s*xual abuse for the victim. Since its founding six years ago, truckers partnering with TAT have helped free hundreds of trafficking victims, including nearly 250 minors. Kylla Lanier, one of TAT’s co-founders, says Kimmel’s actions are exactly what TAT is all about: “Trafficking happens everywhere. It's happening in homes, in conference centers, at schools, casinos, truck stops, hotels, motels, everywhere," she explains. "You know, it's an everywhere problem, but truckers happen to be everywhere."

Although people often think trafficking doesn’t happen close to home, the truth is that trafficking takes place in all types of communities around the world. Fortunately, according to TAT, truckers are in an excellent position to help: “As the eyes and ears of our nation's highways, [they] are in a unique position to make a difference and close loopholes to traffickers who seek to exploit our transportation system for their personal gain.” TAT provides training in how to recognize possible trafficking victims, including subtle signs like a lack of access to their own ID and cash or conversation that sounds scripted, as well as resources to help those trapped by traffickers and pimps.

TAT has partnered with hundreds of trucking companies to make their resources widely available. Since starting their training programs, over 225,000 truckers have been trained and officially registered with the organization. Law enforcement is also on board, with many states actively encouraging TAT training for all truckers; beginning this summer, the state of Ohio will require TAT training in order to receive a commercial driver’s license. Most importantly, the truckers and truck stop employees who work with TAT now recognize that traffickers are out there -- and just how much they can do to help. “Before if I saw a pr******te, I would have thought, 'Hey, that's what they want to do,'” says Sam Tahour, District Manager for TA Travel Plaza. “Now I know what signs to look for. I know what actions to take... This is what's going on out there, and these people need a hero.”
