What are the major problems in Northeast Salem? The city wants input from our neighbors. This survey is anonymous unless you choose to share your information at the end. www.cityofsalem.net/community/northeast-united

The survey will take 10 to 15 minutes to fill out. The deadline is Sunday, August 2. Most people in NEN live in Ward 1.

You can also look up your ward and neighborhood association with links in the survey.

PROTECT 3 SIGNIFICANT OREGON WHITE OAK TREES

If you have concerns about the proposed removal of 3 significant Oregon white oak trees estimated to be up to 200 years old in our neighborhood, please email Peter Domine: [email protected]
Re: Case No. SPR-ADJ-TRP26-01 (2455 Franzen Street NE) by Monday, July 27 at 5 pm.

A developer wants to remove 3 large Oregon white oak trees that are protected by city code- two that are estimated to be close to 200 years old with a diameter of 38". The site plan for a daycare center (which we support) shows a trash enclosure where one tree is growing. Hopefully the trash enclosure could be moved.

Initially, the developer asked for a variance as the trees are protected. Then, Green Light / Home First removed that request, stating that the trees are hazardous and they do not need a permit.

The site is adjacent to the affordable housing development at 23rd and Center Streets NE behind Medical Eye Care Clinic off Medical Center Dr. NE. adjacent to Lee Mission Cemetery.

NEN voted unanimously at our July meeting to oppose the removal of these 3 significant trees until additional testing is done as proposed by Professor David Craig of Willamette University who has studied Oregon white oaks for decades.

The neighborhood association is asking:
-the trash enclosure, building, and access road to the dumpster be moved 1' to 4'. This would allow the hardscape to be an allowable distance from the CRZ (critical root zone) of the trees.
-The arborist conducts a study to assess the structural integrity of the trees.
-Remove a massive amount of ivy weighing down the trees which is one of the reasons the trees are being deemed "hazardous" by the developer Green Light/Home First. Ivy should not be one of the reasons to remove the trees as it can be managed.

We hope that with additional testing, care of the trees, and a slight site revision, that it is possible that some of these trees might be saved.

Oregon white oaks provide ecological, cultural and historic value to our neighborhood. We support the daycare center; however, the neighborhood association hopes that the trees, two of which were here when the Kalapuya lived in this area, can be retained. This species of tree supports as many as 200 different species- more than any other tree in the Pacific Northwest as well as providing carbon sequestration, much more than all of the replacement trees that would be planted.

A letter of any length will be helpful.

Thank you.
