A message from our President:

Dear RC-AAUP members:

We have set up a new gofundme account. The link to the account is below. We have an outstanding legal bill of five hundred dollars which needs to be paid. We are writing to ask members with the ability to do so to donate between thirty to fifty dollars to pay this bill. If you did not donate to the original GoFundMe and are now in a position to contribute, we'd appreciate it. If we raise additional funds, they will be placed in the AAUP bank account to cover future expenses. Please note that these are not dues - the chapter will need to address the question of dues at a future meeting.

We understand that this is an expensive time of the year, but would greatly appreciate the financial support of our members.

In 3 days over 50 donors helped us reach our goal of over $3,500. Now we can hire legal counsel. Thank you so much for supporting Roanoke College faculty as we fight to defend our jobs.

A Welcome Message to all Faculty from the Roanoke College Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (RC-AAUP):

The RC-AAUP is a membership-based independent advocacy organization. The AAUP’s mission is to champion academic freedom, advance shared governance, and promote economic security for all academic professionals. Our chapter mission is the same as the national organization’s.

We want to share a few key facts about what the AAUP chapter is, and what it isn’t:

1) AAUP membership is open to ALL faculty. This includes tenured, tenure-track, and visiting professors at any rank, as well as all lecturers, instructors, and any other contingent faculty. AAUP membership dues are paid to the national organization—not to the local chapter—and are calculated on a sliding scale based on income. For more information about becoming an AAUP member, click here: https://www.aaup.org/membership

2) RC-AAUP chapter meetings are open to all faculty, regardless of AAUP membership. To be clear, you do not need to be an AAUP member to attend or voice your concerns at our chapter meetings. The only limit on non-members is that you must be an AAUP member to vote in chapter elections or on any matters related to chapter business.

3) The RC-AAUP is not a union. The RC-AAUP is instead an independent advocacy organization that only speaks and acts on behalf of our dues-paying members, not the faculty as a whole. We will never claim to speak on behalf of all faculty, and we have no power to compel individual faculty members to engage in any form of speech or action.

4) The RC-AAUP welcomes faculty members representing a diverse range of viewpoints, ideas, and lived experiences. Our sincere hope is that, by drawing upon the ideas and wisdom of all faculty members, our chapter can work collaboratively with all campus stakeholders to reinforce the norms of shared governance as well as develop solutions for the future benefit of Roanoke College.

Roanoke College faculty & staff are fighting for the same things: improved job security, a living wage, and better working conditions.

In a recent forum with staff employees, the administration framed faculty salaries and workloads as a key issue keeping admin from raising staff salaries or hiring more staff in departments and offices that are already stretched way too thin. So many of our staff—in dining services, buildings and grounds, and elsewhere—are underpaid and deserve so much more. The administration seeks to divide and conquer us by pitting staff against faculty, but in this they will fail.

Faculty and staff at Roanoke College have deep and abiding interpersonal relationships as friends, as coworkers, and as colleagues. Our mutual interests as employees are our collective strength!

The AAUP wants to hear from staff and learn from you and fight alongside you. We are available to come talk to any department or office on campus about what we can do.

A sampling of comments from the alumni petition (now with over 1700 signatures) calling on the administration to rethink their plan to layoff some of the college’s best teachers and make the remaining faculty teach additional classes without pay, which will mean less time for student-centered research and mentorship.
