This Hunger Action Month, learn more about 🌟 Nadine, a longtime volunteer for our Neighborhood Pantry in Northwest Roanoke. 💚🧡
After spending nearly 40 years in law enforcement in Boston, Nadine retired and moved to Roanoke, Virginia. She didn’t want to stop serving her community, so she began volunteering at Feeding Southwest Virginia’s Community Solutions Center – a hub for social services, including a food pantry.
“My drive to volunteer came from my dad,” Nadine remembers. “He was an activist in the sense that he wanted to help his community. When he wasn’t working, he’d be either going to a campaign rally or handing out leaflets – and I’d be with him.”
Nadine has been volunteering at Feeding Southwest Virginia – a member of the Feeding America network – for the last three years. Every Tuesday, she helps visitors to the pantry pick out the food that best suits their needs and lifestyle.
“Our line is, ‘Let’s go shopping!’’ Nadine said. “One side of the pantry is refrigerated produce and protein, and the other is canned goods and we take people through and then help them out to their car.”
Through programs like the Community Solutions Center, the Feeding America network is helping ensure neighbors have the food we all need to thrive. But those efforts wouldn’t be possible without volunteers such as Nadine, who give their time during Hunger Action Month and beyond.
“I come back every week because I feel good about what I’m doing and I know I’m making a difference,” she said.
Be sure to tell Nadine THANK YOU for her many years of kind service to those in need. 🧡💚
